Description

The Director of Annual Giving is responsible for planning and leading annual giving fundraising efforts and overall management of the annual fund. The director provides strategic leadership by developing and implementing a long-range plan that will emphasize giving initiatives whose purpose is to build a long-term base of support for the university, as well as a pipeline of leadership, major, and principal donors for the future. This important work will focus on engaging alumni, family, friends, faculty, staff, and students to foster a culture of philanthropy. This role is best suited for a results-oriented individual with superb organizational and analytical skills, deft interpersonal skills and collaborative instincts, high adaptability and creativity, strong communication abilities, and intellectual curiosity. Must be able to evaluate problems accurately and display good, sound judgment and demonstrate a personal commitment to excellence.

Examples of Duties

Plans and implements a strategy for the continued growth of all levels of annual giving; oversees the creation and production of all direct mail, phone-a-thon, email, personal face-to-face and online appeals

Provides direction and coordinates all annual giving programs and events, including planning, assessment, budgeting, record keeping and successful staff support for all events and activities on and off-campus that involve the alumni, parents, and friends of the university. Ensures and maintains the fundraising efforts to keep the operating revenue at a healthy level for sustainable programs of the university.

Oversees the comprehensive annual giving programs: #BonaGivingDay and challenges, Alumni, Bonnies Athletic Fund (BAF), BAF Giving Day, Reunion Class Challenge, Matching Gifts, Parents, Friends of Bonaventure, Senior Class Gift Campaign, Young Alumni Giving, Devereux Giving Society, Faculty and Staff programs.

Coordinates volunteers for the Annual Giving office.

Facilitates with the Director of Advancement Services a yearly pyramid of prospective donors. Maintains personal portfolio of annual giving program dollars and prospects; calls and solicits donors and prospects. Works with senior staff and major gift officers to coordinate Annual Giving Program efforts for trustee and major gift prospects.

In collaboration with the Director of Alumni Engagement, works with the Alumni Council to enhance its fundraising activities of alumni chapters as well as all alumni for annual fund events. Engages promising new Council leaders. Supports collaborative initiatives between Alumni Engagement and Advancement in the Annual Giving campaign, major and planned gift prospect cultivation, and reunion giving, and helps develop and facilitate fundraising approaches and/or activities soliciting alumni support.

Responsible for the communications with all constituencies and analyzes R.O.I. for appeals and direct marketing.

Develops online and hard copy publications for annual honor roll, Bonaventure Magazine, and other publications and press releases as requested.

Coordinates with the Director of Prospect Research to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward alumni, parents, current and future students and friends for the annual giving program.

Supplemental Functions:

Contributes to the overall success of University Advancement by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required.

A minimum of five (5) to ten (10) years of successful experience in higher education development or fundraising.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Handle highly confidential material, understanding that all university information should only be disclosed to others who have a need to know, for legitimate business or educational reasons. Have the ability to exercise and apply sound judgment and decision-making skills as well as the ability to maintain integrity and confidentiality of data.

  • Provide leadership and analytical thought process to decision making and have successful interpersonal skills to facilitate collaboration, operational improvements and the implementation of administrative best practices.

  • Knowledge of budgeting, annual fundraising programs and strategies, strong analytical and volunteer management skills. Knowledge of actual versus forecast procedures.

  • Ability to routinely analyze and report results and trends to understand and inform strategy.

  • Ability to balance priorities to accomplish assigned tasks within the required time frame and to be able to shift quickly between several tasks without loss of continuity.

  • Had advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) to implement, develop, and maintain computer-based business operations.

  • Demonstrated prowess using Raiser’s Edge Database and RENXT. Have the self-motivation to stay current with emerging office technologies and recommend and implement improvements.

  • Ability to work effectively, decisively and flexibly in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Successful working independently as well as part of a team.

  • Excellent technical writing, oral communication, and organizational skills and be able to articulate educational goals, objectives, budgets, evaluation methods, and desired program outcomes. Express timely and accurate communication with administration, faculty, students and community members.

  • Establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with internal and external constituents. Ability to accept supervision, assignments, change and correction.

  • Possess considerable knowledge of modern principles of management and supervisory methods, practices and techniques. Ability to accept and provide effective supervision, assignments, change and correction.

  • Confer regularly with immediate supervisor, other department/university personnel, and/or various firms/organizations/individuals external to the university to exchange information and resolve problems.
