General Function

The Shop and Laboratory Supervisor performs skilled work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service, and repair of laboratory equipment in the engineering labs. The Shop and Laboratory Supervisor develops safety procedures in alignment with Missouri State and Missouri S&T guidelines for the labs, coordinates a learning module on shop safety and the use of laboratory equipment each semester, and ensures that proper safety equipment is being utilized by students, faculty, and staff. The Shop and Laboratory Supervisor assists faculty by preparing samples for laboratory classes and ensuring that all equipment and instrumentation is working for each class. The Shop and Laboratory Supervisor supports distance classes by ensuring that the technology is working and connections are made.

Description of Primary Duties

  1. Coordinates with Missouri State offices of Safety, Transportation, and Environmental Management and Missouri S&T departments of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering to develop and maintain a safety manual for the engineering labs and machine shop.

  2. Checks all engineering labs and the machine shop daily to make sure the equipment is being used properly and that students, faculty and staff are wearing safety glasses, hearing protection and other necessary safety equipment. Reports any safety concerns to the program director.

  3. Develops a training plan and trains students on use of the workshop. Coordinates a learning module on shop safety and use of equipment that will be offered each semester. Students will be required to take the safety training module before using the equipment in the machine shop.

  4. Performs skilled mechanical work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of laboratory equipment and machine shop equipment by inspecting and testing elements of those systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions, troubleshooting problems, and making adjustments and/or performing required repairs using hand and power tools and precision measuring and testing devices, and providing an estimate of repair (and/or replacement) costs to the director.

  5. Minimizes institutional liability regarding both university (Missouri State’s and Missouri S&T’s) compliance with federal regulations by complying with policies, laws and regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal, and the use of chemical substances and materials.

  6. Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment (manufacturing, lab, etc.), maintaining electronic test equipment and mechanical tools by performing spot checks of equipment to determine their working condition, oiling moving parts, cleaning and servicing tools and equipment as directed or specified in the operator’s manual, and returning damaged tools and equipment for repair or replacement.

  7. Obtains equipment, services, and supplies needed by the department by maintaining an inventory of office supplies, purchasing equipment, determining the appropriate method to pay for goods or services purchased by the department following University policy and procedures, and utilizing the appropriate process. Assists the supervisor to varying degrees in maintaining financial control of departmental accounts by reconciling purchases to Financial Services reports.

  8. Helps with instructional labs (extra set of hands, monitor students, etc.), design teams (manufacturing, drive days, trailer towing, travel to competition, etc.) and assists in fabrication of student projects (light woodworking and metalworking). Supports academic instruction and faculty research efforts by planning, designing, constructing, and testing experimental and scientific equipment (often with only a brief oral or written description of expected results) that is mechanical and operational. Coordinates with CNAS Experimental Machinist, Electronic Technicians, Distributed User Support Specialists, and other personnel as necessary.

  9. Ensures shop and lab areas kept clean and tidy.

  10. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

  11. Supports and contributes to the overall success of the Cooperative Engineering Program by performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

    SUPERVISION

The Shop and Laboratory Supervisor is supervised by the Program Director, Cooperative Engineering Program and may instruct or direct others who are assisting in maintenance work.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Education: A high school diploma or the equivalent plus completion of a maintenance vocational/technical school or a recognized apprenticeship program in general mechanical maintenance is required. However, significant mechanical maintenance experience beyond that required for the position and a demonstrated ability in one of the mechanical trades may be substituted for the required vocational/technical school or apprenticeship. Knowledge of the safety equipment and procedures used in construction and machine shops is required.

Experience: At least four years of successful experience in one of the mechanical trades is required.

Skills: Basic woodworking and metalworking skills are required. Requires general mechanical ability which includes skills in the use of electrical test equipment, and small hand and power tools, mechanical equipment, and materials applicable to the mechanical trades. Requires knowledge and ability to be safety-focused. Ability to inspect and maintain lab and manufacturing equipment is required. Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and schematics is required. Ability to complete self-guided projects such as instructional demonstration equipment or building tools for the shop on an as needed/available time basis is required. Computer literacy is required. Oral and written communication skills are required for writing safety rules and conducting safety training with staff, faculty, and students.The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. Mill, lathe, bandsaw, welding, and other similar machine shop skills and CNC shop experience such as setup and running of CNC mills, lathes, routers, etc. are preferred additional skills. Driving with trailers, forklift operation, and knowledge of equipment like furnaces, freezers, water filters, and roller presses would be a plus.

Effort: Must be able to lift and transport materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis; prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching daily; and working in confined spaces. Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual and electrically powered tools and electrical test equipment, to move throughout campus, including climbing stairs, and to work at heights. Work is performed indoors and out-of-doors, occasionally in environments that are dusty, noisy, or which could have work hazards.

License: A valid driver’s license is required.

Other: The scope of the position requires exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and lubricants common to mechanical work that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed.
