WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday – Friday, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., 20-25 hours per week.
Position requires an employee to work between 20-25 hours per week during the school semesters, and 40 hours per week during summer, not to exceed 1,500 hours in a calendar year. Each semester, undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and graduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.
INTERN GUIDELINES:
Students who have completed at least one year of college and are enrolled as a full-time student may apply. Must be enrolled full-time in a degree seeking program. A student’s intern position will end within three months after graduation.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Performs basic engineering duties necessary for the completion of the department’s goals under close supervision of the Manager-Substation Engineering or designee. Work will be performed under the mentorship of various experienced Substation Engineers. Duties will be dependent upon departmental workload and may include any or all of the duties described below.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assists in the preparation of detailed specifications and drawings utilized in soliciting and evaluating bids for substation equipment and other miscellaneous materials.
Assists in review of shop drawings on equipment purchased for use in substations.
Assists in preparation of drawings for installation of equipment within substations.
Assists in the preparation of calculations of grounding requirements and the design of substation ground grids.
Assists in the design of protection and control systems.
Assists in the developing of schematic, logic, and wiring drawings for connection of protection and control, SCADA and communications devices.
Assists in the analysis of various new materials as may be required to establish new approved material vendors or equipment suppliers.
Performs other related duties as required or assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from a school with a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Electrical Engineering majors are preferred. No previous engineering experience is required.
Licensing/Certification:
Must have a valid driver’s license (minimum Class F).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of engineering functions and problem-solving techniques.
Ability to:
o Pay attention to detail.
o Follow detailed instructions.
o Learn and use AutoCAD.
o Work independently.
o Plan, organize, and coordinate technical work.
o Effectively handle numerous assignments accurately.
o Communicate thoughts and ideas verbally and in writing.
Dependable due to the needs and duties of the position.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to bend, stoop, and walk long distances over uneven terrain to survey electric line facilities Must be able to express or exchange ideas and receive detailed information through oral and written communication. Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and close visual acuity to operate a computer is required. Must be able to visually differentiate between color-coded lines and symbols associated with utilization of AutoCAD and/or graphic work design tools.
Working Conditions:
Duties are primarily performed in an office environment with some outside field work in all weather conditions.
Miscellaneous Requirements:
New hires are informed of the requirements of the Internship Program upon hire, and incumbents must continue to meet the requirements each semester in order to continue employment. Interns who do not meet the requirements may be ineligible for the internship and their employment may be terminated.
Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.
Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.
