Job Description Summary

The Instrument Repair Technician is responsible for performing preventive maintenance and repair of BD instrument products used in R&D labs in the BD Diagnostic Systems Baltimore hub. Requires strong customer facing and communication skills, and effective time management. BD COR instruments will be a focus for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, repair and provide preventative maintenance of instrumentation with minimum direct supervision, as requested, in accordance with current ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) standards.

  • Maintain good communications with internal customers to ensure satisfactory service levels.

  • Accurately maintain test equipment, tools, and technical data.

  • Train on and work to applicable Field Service procedures and bulletins, especially those related to BD COR.

  • Comprehensive record keeping of all instruments, PM schedules, and repair activity in lab notebooks and online databases.

  • Interface efficiently with other departments and managers to resolve problems and issues.

  • Will frequently work with R&D Engineers and Lab Technicians to diagnose problems and prescribe corrective actions.

  • Solving, including root cause analysis and repairing instruments.

  • Work with field service technicians and assist in development of new service procedures and refinement of existing procedures.

  • Provide input to program managers or engineering leads on repair and solving requirements for instrument system or subsystem development.

  • As a representative of BD, promote and maintain good team member relations through high standards of personal appearance, ethical behavior, maturity and good judgment.

  • Potential for optional travel within the United States to customer and clinical trial sites required by the organization.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Good solid understanding of electronics and electro-mechanical devices.

  • Experience with high precision electromechanical systems and/or robotic systems is required.

  • Proficient in reading, understanding, and applying assembly drawings, manufacturing and test instructions, and service manuals. Able to follow verbal instruction and actively learn.

  • Able to work with others to tackle novel undocumented problems.

  • Must be able to safely lift and / or move large heavy instruments to gain service access or relocate them from lab to lab. Able to safely lift at least 80 pounds.

  • Must have computer proficiency with user interface and software. Ability to run test protocols.

  • Knowledge in PC and web-based equipment and application software and networking

  • Effective interpersonal skills, communication, customer service, organization/prioritization and administrative skills.

Additional:

  • Lifting requirements - Ability to lift 70 lb. objects from the floor to chest level.

  • Hand Powered Tools - Ability to operate powered drills, powered screw drivers, and other powered tools.

  • Manual Tool Manipulation - Ability to turn manual sockets, crescent wrenches, and screw drivers repeatedly over the course of an 8-to-10-hour day.

  • Ability to sit, kneel, squat, bend, and stand repeatedly in an 8–10-hour period to assemble and repair instrument suites.

  • Ability to push and pull heavy objects (on casters).

  • Ability to perform fine motor tasks while reaching over the course of an 8–10-hour day.

  • Ability to carry a 40 lb. pack on your back or shoulder for up to 1 hour.

  • Able to climb portable ladders and step stools.

  • May be required to wear a respirator while servicing equipment, thus must be able to pass a fit test and medical evaluation.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience with standard mechanical and electrical tools including voltmeters and ability to use computer diagnostic tools.
