The Discovery, Product Development & Clinical Supply (DPDS) Business Technology team is focused on providing leading-edge technology solutions to enable Janssen’s therapeutic discovery and development organizations create innovative medical solutions to address important unmet medical needs in oncology, immunology, neuroscience, infectious diseases and vaccines, and cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

The DPDS Business Technology team members work directly with R&D business partners to provide strategic analysis of business processes, define scientific IT requirements, and develop strategic partnerships to deliver complex cross-site and multi-disciplinary projects and programs.

To achieve Janssen R&D’s commitment to increase the number of drugs it brings to the market, originating from internal efforts, we need to enable expedited exploration of a larger and more diverse molecular space through automation, utilization of novel modalities, profiling approaches and the application of data science. Every one of these challenges is dependent on the technology platforms that enable our increasingly automated laboratory systems, support the management, integration, and analysis of generated data, and provide insight and decision-making support to our researchers.

The Technology Product Owner will provide technology and organizational leadership, drive programs, assess technologies, and deliver IT solutions to enable biomolecular design. Working with technical implementation teams across the organization, the Technology Product Owner will contribute to the ambitious digital transformation of Janssen’s Discovery Engine.

  • Define, scout, implement and champion new data-driven and scientific IT approaches across our therapeutic discovery and development organization, globally

  • Function as a strategic technology partner to R&D colleagues, translating their scientific ambition into technology solutions

  • Inspire new scientific ambition by providing digital transformation of business processes

  • Understand the scientific challenges of R&D partners and translate into actionable insight for technology partners to deliver

  • Initiate and lead cross-site, multi-disciplinary projects with internal and external partners

  • Promote the engagement and commitment of team members and ensure excellent communication between researchers and developers.

  • Define goals and manage risks/budgets, including post project evaluations

  • Evaluate and communicate the strengths and weaknesses of business processes.

  • In partnership with Product Lead Engineers, develop the product vision, strategic direction, and roadmap to enable R&D partners to:

  • Increase efficiency and efficacy of protein therapeutics, gene and cell therapy design

  • Predict and prioritize molecules with desirable function and favorable biophysical profiles

  • Enable effective antibody modeling, protein-protein interaction, vector design, protein expression and stability predictions, and toxicity forecast

  • Employ ML/AI enhanced design and profiling strategies

  • Explore deep learning approaches for biomolecular design

  • Manage related software and platform ecosystem and strategy

  • Explore new partners, technology services and scientific approaches in external collaborations

  • Collaborate closely with platform teams & partners (Technology Services, Data Sciences, Laboratory Systems, Intelligent Automation & Analytics, High-Performance Compute, Data Platforms, etc.) to deliver impactful technology solutions

  • Coordinate external vendor and deployment partners to ensure they meet their contracted milestones, agreed-upon timelines, and metrics using visualizations to communicate more complex data relationships and trends.

  • Address complex problems with broad implications for IT architecture, balancing the often-competing needs of standardization and innovation.

  • Manage resources, reporting, deliverables, and teams in a matrixed organization

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Biomolecular Engineering, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science, or related subjects OR a Master’s degree in Life Sciences and demonstrable experience working in informatics and scientific IT functions OR a Master’s degree in Computer Science and experience applying computational methods in biologics application areas required; PhD is preferred

  • A minimum of 3 years’ pharmaceutical/biotech industry experience required

  • Bilingual in both science and technology functions is required

  • Demonstrated experience with advanced analytics, big data, and statistical analysis, and data science preferred

  • Proven ability to lead projects and apply business acumen to build new opportunities is required

  • Practical knowledge of the drug discovery process, from target identification to late lead optimization is required

  • In-depth knowledge and experience delivering analytical solutions to support R&D experiences for healthcare providers preferred.

  • Strong business sense and the ability to work with business partners to understand business requirements and strategy preferred

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities, multiple partners, multi-functional teams, and evolving needs required.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence, negotiate, and build collaborative partnerships, teams, and trust across functions required.

  • Experience in leading complex data solutions in an Agile/Scrum, Cloud-based environment, and deployments at a global scale is preferred

  • Experience conducting business analysis in pharmaceutical organizations is preferred

  • Ability to generate and communicate complex metrics, using data visualization tools such as Spotfire or Tableau is preferred

  • Expertise in the process of therapeutic antibody discovery and development is required

  • Practical bioinformatics expertise including complex sequence-based analysis is required

  • Experience applying omics technologies (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, etc.) in optimizing drug discovery is preferred

  • Previous experience undertaking experimental protein structure elucidation experience is preferred (NME, X-ray crystallography or CryoEM)

  • Experience in protein engineering is preferred
