Janssen Research & Development, LLC, a member of the Johnson and Johnson family of companies is recruiting for a Postdoctoral Fellow, Viral Biochemistry, located in South San Francisco, CA. The term of this postdoctoral assignment will be a 2-year fixed term position.

We seek an outstanding candidate to join the Viral Biochemistry group. The group uses a multidisciplinary biochemical and biophysical approaches for validation of viral targets, assay development and validation, compound screening and profiling, and molecular mechanism of action studies etc. Current efforts focus on the characterization of viral RNA polymerases and their interactions with small molecule inhibitors in the fields of RSV, influenza virus, and enterovirus etc. The candidate must be a highly motivated self-starter and great teammate who will perform well in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conducting molecular cloning and producing viral proteins from insect or bacterial cells.

  • Purifying proteins using AKTA FPLC, ion exchange, affinity capture, and size-exclusion chromatography.

  • Investigating viral protein enzymatic activity, protein/protein interaction, and protein/nucleic acid interaction using biochemical, biophysical, and molecular & cellular biology methods including steady state and transient state enzyme kinetics, PAGE, FRET, MST, ITC, SPR, Western blot, and ultracentrifugation etc.


  • A Doctoral degree (e.g., Ph.D.) in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular & Cell Biology or related field required.

  • Experience in enzyme characterization is required.

  • Experience in protein/nucleic acid characterization is required.

  • Experience in molecular cloning, protein expression and purification are required.

  • A publication record backing up a productive doctoral tenure is required.

  • Experience in RNA polymerase characterization is preferred.

  • Experience in virology, infectious diseases and drug discovery is preferred.

  • Strong motivation, independence, and ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced multidisciplinary team environment with minimal supervision.
