Summary of Internship

As a Chemistry R&D intern at the Clinical Next-Generation Sequencing Division (CSD) of Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will be working on Ion Torrent Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology. NGS is a growing field that has far reaching applications in medicine ranging from immunotherapy as it relates to personalized care in oncology, to microbial typing following epidemic disease outbreaks.

This is a technology development effort that seeks to push the boundaries of next generation sequencing (NGS). The main challenge for the widespread adoption of NGS in clinical testing is that it has a longer turnaround time compared to existing techniques and is far too expensive to be used extensively and routinely. Here at Ion Torrent™ our mission is to make sequencing simpler, faster, and more cost-effective and scalable than other benchtop next-generation sequencing technologies.

Our R&D group is pioneering an approach that will enable rapid, high-throughput sequencing at a fraction of the cost without comprising on the precision of genomic data. We are leveraging principles in biochemistry, molecular biology and material science to develop the next generation of platforms that will shape our understanding of many scientific disciplines, including clinical research and genetic, environmental, and forensic sciences.

You will be working as part of a high performance, cross-disciplinary team fueled by innovation, collaboration and openness. In this role you will explore and develop novel DNA amplification techniques by manipulating polymeric hydrogels and solid-state chemistries. The goal of this project is to develop an improved template delivery system that can generate greater throughput and improve accuracy of next-generation sequencing.

As part of this experience you will gain insight into a typical product life-cycle, where you will be working with the team to push the technology from concept feasibility to development, and then subsequently through to commercialization. The position starts in May/June, paid working 40 hours per week through August/September.
