Town of South Boston Deputy Police Chief in South Boston, Virginia

Deputy Police Chief The Town of South Boston, VA is seeking a Deputy Police Chief to direct and coordinate the protective service and administrative tasks for the Operations or Services divisions of the Police Department. The designation of Deputy Chief is conferred by the Police Chief and retention of designation is at the pleasure of the Chief. Permanent rank held by department members is retained with accompanying privileges and protection of that rank. Work may involve an element of personal danger. The Deputy Police Chief plans, directs and coordinates the activities of the department such as Operations or Services. Meets and confers with government officials, community groups, special agencies, and the public to provide information on Police activities. Bachelor's degree or higher with a major in social or police science or related field preferred. Five to ten years experience and/or training in police work and supervision required. Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license.Must be aVirginia Certified Law Enforcement Officerat the time of application or possess the ability to attain such certification within one year of employment. Preferred education and experience of ideal candidates:

  • Bachelors degree or higher in Criminal Justice or related field; or a combination of education and experience.
  • Extensive previous law enforcement experience is required with a minimum of five (5) years
  • Active Virginia DCJS law enforcement certification or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Graduation from or willing to attend when course is available, one or more of the following: FBI National Academy, the Southern Police Institute, Senior Management Institute for Police of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, or other similar specialized law enforcement or management training.

The Deputy Police Chief reports directly to the Police Chief. This salaried supervisory position requires a minimum of 40 hours per week, with additional hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary. Selected applicants will be subject to a comprehensive background investigation.

Starting salary is established at a range of $83,000 - $96,919 per year depending on experience and qualifications. Educational pay incentives are offered as an increase to yearly salary for anyone hired with an associate, bachelors, or masters degree. Benefits include the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) with LEOS. A $2,500 sign on bonus is available for a selected applicant with current Virginia law enforcement certification through the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
