Salary Range: $40,000 to $42,000 annually

POSITION SUMMARY:Processes a variety of building permits and answers questions for the Building Department submitted by mail, email or in person. Together with the team, will facilitate an efficient and positive customer experience. This position deals directly with the public at the front counter of the office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.

  • Issues a variety of permits for construction in conjunction with Microsoft Office Products, PDF creation and manipulation, electronic scanning and filing, data/document management, windows file structure and manipulation.
  • Answers general questions regarding zoning, building, and permitting process.
  • Reviews permit applications for compliance and completion, including but not limited to flood districts, historical districts, legal parcel identification, use and setbacks.
  • Maintains electronic records of residential and commercial permits.

NON-ESSENTIAL/MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or as assigned.

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent education is required. College degree preferred.
  • Minimum three years experience working in building contractor, architect, engineering, real estate, or construction related office environment, handling typical office duties with the ability to learn permit processing, proficiency in MS Office, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of City or County government a plus. Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • PowerPoint
  • GIS and IT background beneficial. Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Background in financial/bookkeeping beneficial.
  • Able to multi-task in a demanding office environment.
  • Background in construction, zoning, or real estate.
  • Bilingual language skills a plus.
  • Must be professional, accurate, and able to handle occasional challenging customer situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATION:State of Indiana Notary preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is performed in office settings with moderate inside temperatures and outside in alltypes of weather. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate inthe office and loud in the field. The entireoffice is smoke free.
