The Product Design Engineer will be responsible for new product development within the assigned outdoor products category, creation and maintenance of BOMs, creation of product specifications, and assisting with product certifications. Thorough knowledge of engineering and manufacturing practices within the consumer products industry is required for the candidate to be successful in the role.
Work closely with industrial design firms to transfer their concepts into working solid models as needed for product renderings and prototype models.
Communicate regularly with suppliers to ensure product design intent, safety and performance criteria is met and produced.
Present design solutions to key stakeholders during the design cycle.
Review and understand competitor intellectual property to avoid design infringement.
Understand and follow industry market trends to design new competitive products and innovative features.
Assist in the management of supplier timelines and activities.
Create engineering drawings and robust 3D CAD model parts and assemblies that communicate design intent, function, and manufacturability.
Support day-to-day project activities and resources to meet the project objectives.
Perform engineering analysis on mechanical statics and dynamics, mechanisms, concept selection, cost, and material selection.
Design and perform experimentation for early validation and verification of focused designs and full product concepts.
Review product designs for manufacturing feasibility as well as tooling cost analysis.
Collaborate with various functional groups as needed to meet project objectives.
Follow design initiatives with the ability to manage multiple projects and complete work within project timelines.
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
5+ years of demonstrated success in product development or product design for consumer products, preferably outdoor products.
Expert user of Creo (Pro/E) or Solidworks is required.
Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, especially metal forming and stamping.
Experience designing products which include a variety of materials and manufacturing processes.
Experience working with overseas manufacturing is a plus.
Highly self-motivated and self-directed with the ability to work with teams cross functionally, prioritize well, and communicate in a compelling manner.
Excellent written and verbal presentation and communication skills.
Highly proficient with Microsoft Windows and Office Suite application. Knowledge of Adobe Suite is a plus.
Ability to travel as required in support of project needs. International travel may be required.
Ability to work, contribute and thrive in a rapid development seasonal category.
Ability to interpret regulatory UL, CSA and ANSI testing standards. Familiarity with product certification a plus.
