JOB SUMMARY This position operates assigned equipment in support of the construction, repair, and maintenance of the city\'s water distribution and sewer collection systems. MAJOR DUTIES Assists in the repair and replacement of water services.Assists in the repair of water main breaks.Assists in the repair and replacement of sewer services.Operates assigned equipment.Drives and operates crew trucks, dump trucks, vac-con truck, etc.Flushes and bleeds main and services.Assists new maintenance workers with learning work expectations and procedures.Responds to emergency situations during the day and after hours.Performs all other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION Knowledge of equipment operation principles and practices.Knowledge of water and sewer systems maintenance and repair principles.Knowledge of water parts and fittings.Knowledge of safety rules.Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.Skill in oral and written communication.Skill in operating various types of equipment.Skill in problem solving. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Water &Sewer Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES Guidelines include state and federal regulations and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK The work consists of related equipment operation duties. Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of the water and sewer systems. Success in this position contributes to efficient and effective operations of this department.CONTACTS Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, contractors, customers, and members of the general public.Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed typically while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes sense of smell.The work is performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, and grease, machinery with moving parts, and contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY None.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent required.More than one year of related experience required.Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver\'s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.Must successfully pass criminal background and Motor Vehicle checks.Must successfully pass post-offer DOT drug screening and physical.
