Overview

The EDC Global Business Development Group - Indo-Pacific, is looking for a highly motivated relationship manager and business development professional who will support the team's business development and corporate representation efforts in the Indo-Pacific region.

The successful candidate will have international business development experience working in international markets, complemented by strategic relationship and account management skills, as well as sound knowledge of international banking and financing practices. The position requires knowledge of international markets, business practices and culture in the Indo-Pacific region. The successful candidate will be working from EDC’s Singapore office and may be expected to attend some training at head office in Ottawa, Ontario – Canada.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a passion for EDC's mandate, possess strategic relationship management skills, influencing and business development skills and act as a trusted partner linking foreign opportunities to Canadian capabilities. The Regional Manager will help to promote EDC's value proposition for the Indo-Pacific region, specifically in Singapore and Malaysia but not limited to the Southeast Asian market, and develop shared business objectives with internal EDC sector teams.

To be a successful Regional Manager for EDC, one must:

  • Have a passion for EDC's mandate;

  • Be customer centric and contribute to the implementation of EDC’s Indo-Pacific strategy;

  • Possess the skills of connecting with, building and deepening relationships to key local actors, strategic business partners and key industry associations in the Indo-Pacific, Southeast Asia and Canada;

  • Possess the ability to work independently and as a member of a broader virtual team, including with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service counterparts and Team Canada;

  • Possess the capacity to work a variety of hours due to networking events, social engagements, business meetings and varying time zones including connecting with EDC’s headquarters in Canada;

  • In collaboration with Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service as well as EDC’s account managers in Canada, help connect Canadian small, medium and large enterprises with foreign buyers and identify opportunities to support these Canadian companies;

  • Acquire and provide market intelligence and knowledge across various sectors through external interactions with Indo-Pacific buyers of imported goods and services, banks, Canadian exporters and investors, as well with sector associations;

  • Identify, build and maintain strategic knowledge relationships across the region with the aim of deepening EDC’s knowledge and understanding about doing business in Indo-Pacific markets;

  • Builds and maintains effective long-term relationships with assigned customers ranging from small businesses to major strategic customers within a geographic or industry focus;

  • Possess the ability to generate new financing opportunities in the Indo-Pacific region with corporates and state-owned enterprises across a spectrum of industry sectors and markets, including call planning, prospecting and selling to originate transactions;

  • Possess the ability to structure deals, screen potential clients and facilitate transactions;

  • Pro-actively manage accounts of key buyers, borrowers and market intermediaries, and contributing to the systematic management of EDC's Canadian accounts active or interested in the Indo-Pacific region;

  • Provide corporate representation at public events across the Southeast Asia region (including speaking engagements) as well as during outreach activities in Canada;

  • Support the planning and development of an overall operational plan for the region as well as sector-specific strategies and business development plans;

  • Undertake trade creation initiatives such as spearheading and organizing in-market trade missions, business matchmaking events as well as leading foreign buyers outbound visits to Canada.

Skills & Knowledge

  • A proven track record of developing strategic relationships; must have well developed soft skills enabling building of contacts with senior business decision makers;

  • Knowledge of international capital markets, banking environment, global insurance environment and export credit agency environment;

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and deliver on new financing opportunities;

  • Solid influencing, negotiating, relationship management and highly effective presentation skills;

  • Ability to work effectively with relevant EDC teams and exhibit appropriate leadership and teamwork skills;

  • Ability to work autonomously with strong initiative under general guidance of the EDC Chief Representative – Singapore & Malaysia;

  • Ability to coordinate conflicting priorities within tight deadlines and meet work targets;

  • Ability to write concise reports requiring synthesis and thoughtful analysis of data on international trade, financial and macro-economic issues and sectors of focus for EDC;

  • Ability to identify key account targets and develop and implement account plans to meet objectives;

  • Strong cross-cultural awareness/sensitivity;

  • Willingness to work outside regular business hours when required and ability to work in virtual team.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience, including international business development experience in a business development and/or relationship management role;

  • Experience in financial services industry, either in relationship management, selling or underwriting, or in consulting or advisory services;

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;

  • Valid travel documents as travel to various Indo-Pacific countries and to Canada may be required for training or business purposes;

  • Knowledge of deal structuring, credit and financial analysis.

Assets

  • Strong knowledge of business conditions in Southeast Asian market and the application of EDC services in these markets;

  • Proficiency in a second language such as Bahasa or other Indo-Pacific languages will be an added advantage;

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Finance or equivalent; Proficiency in both official languages (English & French).

Salary Range

  • Business Development 3:Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $93,500 To $140, 200 plus a performance-based incentive.

  • Please be advised that this position is based at our Singapore branch office located at the Marina Bay Financial Centre, Singapore.
