Koniag IT Systems, a subsidiary of Koniag Management Solutions, is seeking a highly experienced and knowledgeable Computer Operator IV (SCLS) to join our team. This senior-level position is responsible for overseeing and managing the efficient operation and maintenance of mission-critical computer systems, networks, and related equipment, ensuring optimal performance, security, and availability. The ideal candidate should possess extensive expertise in computer operations, strong leadership abilities, and a proven track record in managing complex IT environments.

Essential Functions, Responsibilities & Duties may include, but are not limited to:

The Computer Operator IV will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing and coordinating the monitoring and control of mission-critical computer systems, networks, and peripheral equipment to ensure efficient and uninterrupted operations.

  • Developing and implementing comprehensive maintenance plans, including software updates, system backups, hardware checks, performance tuning, and capacity planning, following industry best practices.

  • Leading the identification, troubleshooting, and resolution of complex operational issues, system errors, and hardware/software malfunctions, coordinating with technical support teams, vendors, and stakeholders to implement solutions.

  • Establishing and enforcing robust data security and integrity protocols, including data backup, recovery, access controls, and compliance with relevant regulations and standards.

  • Maintaining detailed records and documentation of system operations, maintenance activities, incidents, performance metrics, and system configurations.

  • Providing technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to a team of computer operators and support staff, ensuring adherence to established policies, procedures, and best practices.

  • Collaborating with IT professionals, system administrators, and other stakeholders to optimize system performance, implement enhancements, and plan for future system requirements and upgrades.

  • Staying up-to-date with the latest technologies, tools, and industry best practices in computer operations and maintenance, and driving the adoption of new processes and methodologies to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Participating in project planning and implementation activities related to system upgrades, migrations, or new deployments, and ensuring successful project execution and operational readiness.

  • Developing and managing budgets, resource allocations, and operational plans for the computer operations team and infrastructure.

Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust

Work Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in computer operations, system administration, or a related role in an IT environment, with at least 4 years in a supervisory or management capacity.

  • Adapt to a variety of nonstandard problems that require extensive operator intervention (e.g. frequent introduction of new programs, applications, or procedures).

  • Respond to computer output instructions or error conditions, choose or devise a course of action from among several alternatives and alter or deviate from standard procedures if standard procedures do not provide a solution (e.g. reassigning equipment in order to work around faulty equipment or transfer channels); then refers problems if necessary.

  • Typically, completed work is submitted to users without supervisory review.

  • Relevant certifications in computer operations, system administration, project management, or related areas (e.g., CompTIA, Microsoft, Cisco, PMP) are required.

  • Extensive expertise in computer systems, networks, and peripheral equipment, including hardware and software components, operating systems, system administration tools, and automation frameworks.

  • Expert-level troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex system issues and develop proactive mitigation strategies.

  • Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Bash) and automation tools for system administration tasks, as well as familiarity with DevOps practices and tools.

  • In-depth understanding of data backup and recovery procedures, data security and access control measures, and compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze system performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimization strategies.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document procedures, provide technical training, and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including executive management.

  • Proven leadership and mentoring abilities, with the capacity to manage and guide a team of computer operators and support personnel, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, managing multiple priorities and projects simultaneously, and making sound decisions under pressure.

Desired Skills and Competencies:

  • Extensive experience in a government or military IT environment, with a thorough understanding of relevant regulations, compliance requirements, and security protocols.

  • Knowledge of virtualization technologies, cloud computing, containerization, and modern infrastructure architectures (e.g., microservices, serverless).

  • Expertise in project management methodologies and the ability to lead and coordinate complex system implementation and migration projects.

  • Proficiency in risk assessment, disaster recovery planning, and business continuity strategies.

  • Experience with scripting and automation frameworks, such as Ansible, Puppet, or Chef, and familiarity with infrastructure as code (IaC) principles.

  • Strong budgeting, resource allocation, and operational planning skills, with the ability to manage and optimize IT infrastructure costs.

Working Environment & Conditions

This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

This position is primarily indoors, consistent with a standard office position and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. The incumbent is required to stand, walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The workload may require the incumbent to sit for extended periods of time. The incumbent must be able to read, do simple math calculations and withstand moderate amounts of stress.

The incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
