Definition & Essential Functions:

  • Under general supervision, lifeguard multiple aquatic programs for the Sierra Vista Aquatic Center.

Essential functions included in the job description may include tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.

  • Maintaining swimmer safety, water extraction, and basic life support measures.
  • Exposures to blood-borne and air-borne pathogens through contact with bodily fluids or infected persons are an inherent risk of the position.

APPLICANTS MUST BE ABLE TO WORK FLEXIBLE HOURS TO INCLUDE MORNING, EVENING AND WEEKEND SHIFTS.

RECREATION FACILITIES ARE OPEN FROM 0530-2000 AND INCLUDE HOURS ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.

Tasks:

  • Performs lifeguard duties and responsible for numerous aquatic activities such as lap swim, splash time, pool rentals and special events, also required to perform various daily facility and pool maintenance.
  • Applicant must be able to work a flexible schedule; work hours will vary depending upon type of program that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Applicant may also be required to work non-aquatic department and city special events.

Knowledges, Skills & Other Characteristics:

Knowledge of:

  • The essential characteristics of a professional lifeguard
  • Injury prevention and facility safety
  • Water park lifeguarding. Pool rules, policies, procedures, and enforcement
  • Preventing disease transmission
  • Principles, practices, and concepts of basic first aid

Skill in:

  • Patron surveillance
  • Performing procedures for a water emergency
  • Activating an emergency action plan
  • Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation for the professional rescuer (CPR/PR)
  • Automated External Defibrillation (AED) and Oxygen administration
  • Caring for head, neck, and back injuries in the water and on land
  • Communicating effectively, orally and in writing
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the public and department staff

Qualifications:

  • Submission of high school diploma, GED, unless currently attending high school.
  • Submission of certifications required, if applicable.
  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
  • Applicant must pass in-person skills test.
  • Successful completion of Lifeguard certification course required within 6 months of hire.

Desired Certifications:

  • Current American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard
  • Current American Red Cross (ARC) CPR for the professional rescuer
  • Current American Red Cross (ARC) First Aid for the professional rescuer
  • Current American Red Cross (ARC) AED
  • American Red Cross Administering Emergency Oxygen
  • American Red Cross (ARC) Water Park Lifeguard Certification
