Definition & Essential Functions:

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT):\ Candidates must hold a current valid CPAT certificate/verification letter (dated no more than twelve months prior of application date).\ \ Additional Incentive Pay: \$5980 annual (\$230 per pay) for paramedic certification\ \ Under the supervision of a Fire Captain or his/her assigned representative in the absence of the Fire Captain performs a variety of duties to respond to and manage emergency medical incidents, structural and non-structural fires, and hazardous material situations throughout the response area and on automatic and mutual aid assignments.Required to work twenty-four (24) hour shifts or forty (40) hour per week schedules as assigned.\ \ FLSA status:Non-Exempt.\ \ Essential functions included in the job description may include tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Tasks:

• Initiates pre-hospital medical care to individuals, provides basic and/or advanced life support in accordance with Arizona laws, Arizona Department of Health Services rules and regulations, regional protocols and base hospital directions.
• Performs all fire suppression activities to combat and extinguish fires at a fire scene, including laying and/or connecting hose, directing water, and raising and climbing ladders.
• Utilizes a variety of fire suppression equipment including chain saws, axes, smoke ejectors, and forcible entry tools.
• Enters, searches for, and extricates individuals from burning structures
• Removes dangerous/damaged structures/furniture and fixtures.
• Performs activities to combat and extinguish wildland/brush fires
• Performs general maintenance of fire station, checks tools, equipment, supplies, and materials of each vehicle, including all fire suppression, emergency medical response, and Hazmat units to ensure that vehicles contain all required tools, equipment, supplies, and materials, and are in proper operating condition
• Performs community preparedness functions such as hydrant-testing, pre-fire planning, fire inspections, and station tours.
• Responds to hazardous materials calls, performs confined space rescues, and performs a variety of emergency rescue activities at fire, accident, hazardous material, or other emergency situations as a certified Emergency Medical Technician
• Operates radio and other communication equipment
• Participates in regular training drills/programs in emergency medical service, firefighting, and other related areas.
• Presents programs to public on safety, emergency medicine, and fire prevention and suppression topics, and conducts station tours.
• Maintains required drivers license and certifications in fire and emergency medicine.
• Writes reports accurately and in a timely manner, documenting incident data, patient assessment and patient treatment.
• Maintains positive working relationships.

Knowledges, Skills & Other Characteristics:

Knowledge of:

• First aid, CPR, and other emergency medical care techniques and methods (commensurate to his or her level of training/certification).
• Structural fire suppression principles, methods, techniques, and practices.
• Wildland fire suppression principles, methods, techniques, and practices.
• The principles, practices, techniques, and methods of hazardous material control/clean-up (FRO).
• The streets, addresses, and locations throughout the response area.
• Applicable state, federal, and local statutes, codes, and ordinances.
• The use and purpose of a variety of specialized equipment, tools, and apparatus used in fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials, emergency medical and tactical medical situations.
• Applicable OHSA and EPA laws, regulations, and requirements.
• An awareness of the principles, practices, techniques, and methods of confined space and steep terrain rescues.

Skill in:

Applying basic and/or advanced emergency medical assistance techniques.

Using a personal computer with basic office software, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation applications.

The safe and proper use of all specialized equipment, vehicles, apparatus, and materials.

Understanding and interpreting complex statues, ordinances, regulations, and standards.

Working effectively in hazardous environments subject to exposure to high temperatures, toxic fumes, unstable structures, infectious/contagious diseases, blood born pathogens, personal injury, quickly changing priorities, and the ability to remain calm during emergency situations.
