A special entrance rate has been established in accordance with State Civil Service Rule 6.5(b).

The special entrance rate for the Police Officer 3-A position is $21.27 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years of experience in law enforcement work.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Must have attained eighteenth birthday at time of appointment.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment.

For some positions, evidence of POST certification must be submitted at the time of the application.

May be required to qualify annually with a firearm.

For some positions, applicant must be eligible for bond.

NOTE:

All classified jobs in State service with police officer and wildlife enforcement titles qualify as law enforcement.

Jobs outside State service that will qualify as law enforcement are those performed while commissioned with the power of arrest.

Military police in the armed services are law enforcement; security/guard duty is NOT qualifying.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To provide a full range of police services with a primary emphasis on enforcement of laws, investigations of crimes and accidents, and providing emergency services and crime prevention programs; may serve as assistant shift supervisor by overseeing the full range of police services on an assigned shift.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Advanced.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

General from a higher-level police official. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

May serve as a lead worker over lower-level police officers on an assigned shift.

LOCATION OF WORK:

Statewide.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from Police Officer 2 by the presence of routine involvement in complex investigations, intelligence gathering, and surveillance operations.

Differs from Police Sergeant by the absence of direct supervisory responsibility.

May serve on a hazardous materials or crisis intervention response team and routinely investigate serious crimes and accidents.

Protects lives and property with primary emphasis on enforcement of laws, investigations of crimes and accidents, and providing emergency services and crime prevention programs.

Intervenes in complex matters requiring criminal investigation and collection of evidence, arrests, and testimony in court.

Works special assignments involving large crowd control operations, surveillance activities, intelligence gathering activities, and matters involving fire safety, environmental safety, hazardous materials, and selective enforcement programs.

May serve as an assistant shift supervisor.
