Indian Health Service Surgical Scrub Technician in Shiprock, New Mexico

Summary This position is located in NNMC, Division of Nursing, Operating Room, Organizational title - Surgical Scrub Technician; serves as a member of the surgical team. Delivers patient care, before, during and after surgery. Incumbent reports to the OR Supervisory Nurse. Note: Position is open until filled and may close earlier than the current closing date. Responsibilities Performs duties for scheduled and emergent surgical procedures. Evaluates patient's ongoing needs during intra-operative intervention and takes required actions. Performs as first assistant when situation arises, assisting the Surgeon in the positioning and intra-operative care of the patient. Performs surgical counts with RN at beginning and end of procedures and any time a situation may warrant a count. Assist in the transport of patients, assists with the insertion of CVP lines and is able to administer oxygen and provide emergency supplies. Input surgical caseload data into computer database. Assist with the duties of the Medical Supply Technician. Follows strict Infection Control practices. Completes inventory and decontaminating of all surgical instrumentation from the OR and other units. This includes decontaminating and sterilizing powered surgical instruments. Checks instrumentation for proper functioning prior to sterilization. Tracks and follow-up on work orders and supply requests, restocks supplies utilized within perioperative department. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Specialized Experience: Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as: Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care. Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus. Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement. Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients. Select surgical and gastrointestinal supplies for surgical cases as needed. Sets up surgical suits as indicated by surgical case. Prepares and maintains the sterile field of the operating room using the principles of aseptic technique. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
