Boehringer Ingelheim Human Pharma Business Strategist | non-line manager or staff | Strategy & Analytics Dept. in Shinagawa, Japan

Role Purpose:

Drive strategic decision making across Nippon Boehringer Ingelheim, such as trade-offs / investment decisions between the evolving Therapeutic Areas, and support Human Pharma Leadership Team and/or Head of Human Pharma Business Unit by providing a holistic view of the business. Human Pharma Strategist is the main driver of strategic decisions and integrator of complex cross-functional, cross-TA decision making factors.

  • The role is crucial in influencing the degree of success of Human Pharma business in Japan, both in the short and long-term.

  • Outputs of this role will allow Head of Human Pharma Business Unit and Human Pharma Leadership Team members to become aligned on mid- to long-term Human Pharma strategy and to make subjective data-driven decision when required to make cross-Therapeutic Areas/divisions prioritization or key Human Pharma business decisions.

Key Job Accountabilities:

Develop mid to long-term Human Pharma business strategy plans while identifying and assessing both internal and external factors that has the most impact to the Human Pharma business, together with Head of Human Pharma Business Unit and Human Pharma Leadership Team and update at a regular basis (e.g., annually)

  • Identification, assessment and analysis of the goal and its specific objectives of Nippon Boehringer Ingelheim to maximize sales and business potential.

  • Successful application of current pharmaceutical landscape to our business (identify areas for growth and development).

Identify, assess, and report business opportunities/risks and contribute to the timely delivery of insights and proposals for Head of Human Pharma Business Unit and/or Human Pharma Leadership Team members decision making related to cross-Therapeutic Areas/divisions business or high priority business items.

  • Accurate understanding of the cross-Therapeutic Areas/divisions business question/challenges.

  • Quality research and analysis to help develop proposals that best align to our Human Pharma business strategy by working cross-functionally across all Therapeutic Areas/divisions.

Closely monitor internal/external changes / trends and provide timely and accurate information on business pertinent risks or significant changes for Human Pharma business.

  • Providing timely and quality information and contribute to minimize negative impact/maximize positive impact for Human Pharma business through Human Pharma Leadership Team discussion and decisions.

Lead or contribute as active working team member various projects to drive cross-functional / cross-Therapeutic Areas agendas based on Human Pharma business strategy plans. (e.g., Developing cross functional effort guidance, cross functional effort setting…)

  • Providing insights and proposals from Human Pharma Strategy perspective.

  • Deliver valuable output for optimal Human Pharma business model in accordance with Human Pharma Strategy.

The role requires pro-active cross-functional working while maintaining a neutral position when prioritizing cross-Therapeutic Areas/divisions initiatives:

Report to Head of Human Pharma Strategy Group, Strategy & Analytics Department

  • Internal interfaces:

  • Head of Human Pharma Business Unit, Human Pharma Leadership Team

  • Marketing, Sales, Medicine etc. (both at function head and operational levels)

  • Regional Business Management

  • External interfaces:

  • Market research agencies, consulting companies

Qualifications:

The role requires a visionary individual with broad experience of the drug development and commercialization who can process various internal and external information and accurately assess the impact on Human Pharma business both short and long-term to make the best proposals under the rapidly changing industry landscape.

Must-have:

5+years of professional experience as:

  • Strategy consultant in management consulting firm, and/or

  • Business planner or analyst in pharmaceutical/healthcare company

  • Logical and critical thinker with strong interpersonal and negotiation skills

  • Well-developed strategic thinking and conceptual skills to integrate the information/data and visualize the problems and solutions.

  • Significant analytic skills

  • able to clearly interpret and distill financial, scientific, clinical, and commercial information.

  • Ability to effectively work cross functionally and to consolidate various forms of information (primary and secondary market research, forecasts, competitive intelligence and relevant laws and regulations).

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills both in English and in Japanese

  • Japanese: Native-Fluent

  • English: Business level

  • Flexible and willingness to adapt in a changing environment.

  • Ability to work well under pressure.

  • High levels of pro-activity, agility, persuasiveness, and independent working as team player

  • Open minded, motivating personality with drive and initiative

  • Unbiased international view and inter-cultural competence

  • Advanced MS Office tool skill (PPT, Excel, Word, Teams, One note etc.,)

Bachelor’s or master’s degree

Nice-to-have:

  • Project management skill

  • Understanding of pharmaceutical industry and trend of environmental changes

  • Understanding of Japanese regulation, policy, and healthcare system

  • Understanding of finances (P&L)

  • Knowledge and/or experience with strategic frameworks, marketing, and execution

  • Wide breadth of business acumen and understanding of marketing method
