Transportation Engineer IPerforms transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.Transportation Engineer II or IIIPerforms [advanced] and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, projectdevelopment and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicablefederal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials andprivate entities. [Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues arerarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence]Essential Duties:Transportation Engineer I, II or IIIAssists in overseeing construction project traffic control plans; periodically reviews traffic control devices with AreaEngineers.Assists in overseeing contracts, issuing work orders and monitoring construction schedules and contractor payments andjob progress on construction projects.Assists in reviewing shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.Assists in the development, preparation and letting of maintenance contracts for the district.Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation.Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technicalsupport.Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates andcontracts.Performs planning work such as plan review, calculations and assisting in transportation planning studies.Resolves differences between contractors and inspectors.Transportation Engineer II or IIIAssists Area Engineers with construction contract administration matters.Reviews shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.Meets with law enforcement agencies and/or city officials to discuss traffic problems and possible solutions.Monitors contractors' compliance with plans and specifications.Transportation Engineer IIIAnalyzes schedule trends, determines risks and recommends options to management for corrective action for complexprojects.Investigates materials failures or fabrication problems; reviews test data and assists in determining cause of failingmaterials.Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.Trains engineering staff
