The Commercial Lines Middle Market Senior Field Underwriter is responsible for profitable production and ongoing management of commercial lines businesses. The role owns and manages books of business over time including territory planning, performance analysis and agency management to maximize production, profit, and retention. Additionally, the role serves as an underwriting contact for agency personnel by responding to agent inquiries, assisting in the development and delivery of agency training, and monitoring compliance objectives. The role also pursues leads for new business pipelines under the guidance of the Leader and is recognized as a senior team member to coach and develop less experienced Underwriters and staff. Underwrites and collaborates on new and renewal commercial lines businesses and qualifies customers and leads the account team to analyze new business opportunities from an exposure pricing service and sales perspective engaging all resources available to them. Makes responsible decisions regarding risk acceptability and pricing throughout the policy life cycle and monitors other internal business partners (claims, risk control, premium audit, underwriting, line of business leaders, billing, etc.); establishes an underwriting relationship with policyholders. Develops and maintains commercial lines knowledge that is used to consider opportunities and assist agencies. Acts as the account steward for all accounts within the assigned territory making sure that we live up to the commitments on the account. Develops renewal strategy for commercial lines business. Discusses the renewal strategy with the agent and assists in delivering renewal as needed and act as a subject matter expert in the department regarding large premium accounts market conditions and competitors. Communicates and partners with sales representatives, account managers, brokers, clients and prospective clients regarding case issues and underwriting assessments, pricing, and rating. Conducts field surveys on prospect and existing policyholders and writes reports for underwriting and delivers consultative and technical services to policyholders. Develops and executes an effective agency strategy to grow the business and participates in underwriting related continuing education. Assists the Region Leader in training and mentoring other underwriting team members. Reviews and underwrites primarily renewal business for Commercial Lines accounts and evaluates exposures to loss, determines pricing, and determines acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and the limits of authority established for them. Notifies agencies of adverse underwriting decisions, underwriting requirements, status, and declinations and answers questions from agencies, policyholders or other external contacts and escalates issues to management as necessary. Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends, and shares this information with team members. Conducts special studies and projects regarding underwriting procedures and practices. Submits recommendations to improve department results, including coverage, pricing, or competitive issues. Travels as often as needed including regular utilization of assigned fleet vehicle to cover assigned territory. May involve traveling on short notice or other daily driving duties as assigned regardless of location. 2-5 years of Underwriting experience. Bachelor's degree in related field and/or commensurate work experience. Valid driver's license and a driving record that conforms to company standards.
