Blue Origin LLC Turbomachinery Engineer - Mechanical III in Seattle, Washington

This role is part of the Lunar Transportation business unit, which develops Blue Origin's multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers who develop and test cryocoolers designed for zero-boiloff (ZBO) applications, you will focus on the rapid design and implementation of a novel turbine and compressor hardware for future spaceflight systems. Your domain expertise will be utilized for all aspects of designing, building, and testing turbine and compressor hardware for use in Brayton cycle cryocoolers and power systems. In this position, you will utilize your computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis expertise for aerodynamic design, primary and secondary flow path design, thermal analysis, and structural analysis of high-speed turbomachines. Relying on your expertise, you will validate CFD models against the test data and make recommendations for design changes and future test campaigns. Special Mentions : Relocation provided. Minimum Qualifications: B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or related field 5+ years' experience in high-speed gas turbomachinery design, develop, and testing. Fundamental knowledge of turbomachinery component design and manufacturing, such as mechanical/thermal design, secondary flows, and aerodynamic design. Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion. Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills with ability to directly collaborate with external parties including government and commercial entities. Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum. Preferred Qualifications: Master's or Ph.D. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or related field Experience with turbomachinery specific to gas compression and expansion Proficiency with CFD platforms (CFD++, ANSYS CFX, BladeGen, FLUENT) Experience with FEA structural analysis tools (ANSYS Workbench preferred) Experience with aerodynamic tool development using MATLAB, Python, C/C++ Experience with cryogenic fluids, Brayton power and refrigeration cycles Familiarity with gas bearings and seals, hardware fabrication and development Experience with high-speed data acquisition and instrumentation using accelerometers and proximity probes. Ability to work independently on rapid development programs. Highly organized, safety and quality conscious, with excellent technical written and verbal communication skills.
