Global Talent Management & Compensation (GTMC) is looking for a Software Development Manager to lead an engineering group in Seattle, WA as part of a strategic investment to build technology that is transforming the way Amazonians discover, explore, and pursue the next step in their career. GTMC builds intelligent products and services that offer a consumer grade user experience and use science to manage talent development at Amazon by embracing our leadership principles culture. Our engineering teams include big data engineering, machine learning, micro-service software development, front-end software development, and user experience design. We are building the intelligence that will enable Amazon to retain its unique “Day One” company culture whilst growing its talent base in excess of 1 million employees.

As a Software Development Manager, you will lead a group of engineers responsible for building front-end experiences and back-end services that support our 3 year vision of delivering an intelligent consumer-grade experience to manage our global worldwide talent. You will be playing a pivotal role in evolving our current product experience and its service layer into a task-based experience that implements a modern UI and intelligent services in order to help Amazon employees around the world to grow their career.

As the ideal candidate you will be experienced in managing a team of software engineers, and technical program managers. You will have a proven track record of shipping complex software solutions through an agile methodology. You will have the ability to dive deep into the understanding of problems in order to help your team make the right technical decisions for the product and the business. You will have a proven track record of managing through others and developing the career of your direct reports. You will also be a strong communicator and will have proven abilities in managing through ambiguous situations and communicating to VP level. #techleader

  • Architect and deliver intelligent services enabling GTM's talent management vision.

Key job responsibilities

As a Software Development Manager, you will lead a group of engineers responsible for building front-end experiences and back-end services that support our 3 year vision of delivering an intelligent consumer-grade experience to manage our global worldwide talent. You will be playing a pivotal role in evolving our current product experience and its service layer into a task-based experience that implements a modern UI and intelligent services in order to help Amazon employees around the world to grow their career.

A day in the life

Start your day with the team, learning about what the team plans to accomplish and helping understand any blockers that you can own and remove for your engineers.

After standups, you will find yourself either syncing with product teams on roadmap and priority discussions, sitting with your TPM and Sr. SDE on a technical design for an upcoming feature, or working with other Sr. Technical leaders on operational excellence.

Servant leadership is important, and 1:1s both within your team and outside of your team will allow you to stay on top of any development from employee career growth to upcoming launches and sprint work.

GTMC builds intelligent products and services that offer a consumer grade user experience and use science to manage talent development at Amazon by embracing our leadership principles culture. Our engineering teams include big data engineering, machine learning, micro-service software development, front-end software development, and user experience design. We are building the intelligence that will enable Amazon to retain its unique “Day One” company culture whilst growing its talent base in excess of 1 million employees.

The Talent Movement team is comprised of 2 other engineer teams, one in NYC and 1 in Edinburgh Scotland. Along with these engineering teams, we also have a BIE function that supports the broader director organization.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of engineering experience

  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
