REI Senior Legal Specialist in Seattle, Washington

Overview

REI’s Legal team is a key partner to achieving its vision. The Sr. Legal Specialist – Labor and Employment is a full-time paralegal role. This person will partner with attorneys and human resources on labor and employment issues, and be a key member of the legal team, reporting to the Sr. Counsel – Labor and Employment. They will model and act in accordance with REI’s guiding values and mission.

  • Support the Employment Legal Team on pre-litigation employment disputes

  • Conduct initial legal analysis/assessment of employment demand letters and agency charges as needed assisting with factual development and analysis of cases including conducting interviews of witnesses, organizing documents, summarizing information, and talking to key stakeholders

  • Update and manage company policies, employment agreement templates, process documents, playbooks and other forms

  • Identify compliance priorities in areas such as EEO, wage and hour, employment law, training requirements hiring practices, disability accommodation, drug testing, hiring practices, leaves, workforce data related privacy, ethics, and employee policies; support projects to address those priorities.

  • Stay current on changes to state labor and employment law and identify actions needed based on changes to law.

  • Partner with attorneys to educate clients regarding employment law matters and consult with clients on employee matters.

  • Partner with internal Centers of Excellence in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Benefits, Health, Safety and Security. Serve on cross function teams as needed.

  • Be responsible for independent project management and client partnership, as well as working with and assist managing external counsel on select matters.

  • Develop and implement best practices and process improvements.

  • Help identify new and maintain existing resources and tools for clients, including SharePoint sites and external tools.

  • Provide support related to agency charges and litigation and internal case tracking.

  • Develop and implement best practices and process improvements that result in improvements and efficiencies to the employment law function

  • Identify and implement team goals for establishing new practices related to subject matter expertise, as well as managing design and progress monitoring

  • Coordinate with attorneys on special requests or highly complex and confidential projects

  • Draft legal documents, communications and reports under attorney supervision

  • Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal Studies or Legal Studies or a Bachelor’s Degree and a Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-accredited program.

  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience in a paralegal role.

  • Ability to identify and assess risks and escalate issues to in-house attorney, as needed.

  • High level of character and personal integrity

  • Ability to build open, trusting, and honest relationships, effectively influencing a wide range of people

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and work streams to meet critical, short-term deadlines.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, strong organizational skills, excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, sound judgment, thorough, and accurate with excellent attention to detail.

  • High level of character and personal integrity

  • Ability to build open, trusting, and honest relationships, effectively influencing a wide range of people

  • Team player having the desire and initiative to develop and take ownership.

  • Intellectual curiosity and desire to learn and develop new skills

  • Contributes to the success of company by leading or assisting with other projects as needed

  • Interest in leveraging technology for efficiency in legal operations. Familiarity with MS Office, Legal Tracker, and iManage is a plus

  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment and uphold the highest standards of discretion and confidentiality.

  • Experience in retail, consumer, or experiential/hospitality business preferred, but not required.

  • Works smart by setting effective work goals, establishing priorities, and planning well in order to produce quality work.

  • Executes effectively by using resources efficiently, meeting deadlines, and keeping others informed of work plans and progress toward goals.

  • Clearly conveys and accurately receives information by a variety of methods and in various situations.

Pay Range

$83,700.00 - $134,000.00 per year
