The Team

The Enterprise Data Solutions (EDS) team is part of the Chief Information Office (CIO) org and comprises of five teams: Advanced Analytics & Insights (Data Science & Business Intelligence), Knowledge Management, Data Engineering, Data Infrastructure & Health Data Platforms. The EDS team’s support for Data & Analytics extends across multiple Program Strategy Teams (PST’s) and Global Country Offices.

The Knowledge Management (KM) team is creating the future of AI-driven KM at the foundation. The team’s vision is to capture and organize the foundation’s knowledge assets including structured, semi-structured and unstructured data and empower all employees with easy and equitable access to these assets to guide decision-making and improve the culture of knowledge sharing. An essential part of this vision is an AI-powered search & discovery platform that helps employees find connected knowledge assets and uses cutting-edge technologies, such as large language models (LLMs) to allow natural language questions, create chatbots and to generate semantically relevant data and insights from documents.

**This is a 3-year LTE assignment

Your Role

As a Senior AI Engineer on the Knowledge Management team, you will play a key role in developing, integrating, and managing applications that leverage AI and LLMs to enable innovative and intuitive access to knowledge assets at the foundation.

Your work will align closely with the Foundation’s AI strategy to establish standards, best practices and the ethical use of language models. You will stay current with industry trends and serve as a trusted advisor, collaborating with teams on their AI initiatives.

What You’ll Do

Your work will include:

  • Responsible for incorporating use of LLMs into various applications. This includes developing code that interacts with language models through APIs, developing user interfaces, and ensuring that the models serve the specific needs of applications, such as search and discovery, and information retrieval.

  • Train and fine-tune models, optimize performance, and adjust parameters to improve accuracy and efficiency.

  • Continually enhance the solutions and optimize the architecture by evaluating available language models and relevant AI technologies.

  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation detailing the language models to ensure seamless understanding, efficient troubleshooting, and future development.

  • Foster trust, empower team members, and cultivate positive relationships within the team and across the foundation to advance AI and LLM projects and practices

  • Collaborate as a trusted advisor and Generative AI consultant to enhance business outcomes and project delivery.

  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in AI and LLM’s

  • Your Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, or higher, in Data Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, Statistics, or related field, or equivalent experience.

  • At least 5+ years’ experience in machine learning or software engineering, including building products or solutions.

  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, or C++

  • Experience with AI frameworks and libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras

  • Familiarity with frameworks such as Langchain, Llamaindex

  • 3+ years of professional experience with cloud technologies (AWS, GCP, Azure)

  • Experience with integrating language models, GPT models or multi-modal models with applications or user interfaces.

  • Experience in prompt engineering, agentic frameworks, and retrieval augmented generation.

  • Knowledge of NLP concepts, such as language models, tokenization, and embeddings.

  • Knowledge of ethics in AI and responsible AI development

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with ability to present and influence at all management levels.

  • Experience with agile development methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban

    The salary range for this role is $151,200 to $226,800 USD. We recognize high-wage market differences in Seattle and Washington D.C., where our offices are located. The range for this role in these locations is $164,700 to $247,100 USD. As a mission-driven organization, we strive to balance competitive pay with our mission. New hires salaries are typically between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint. Actual placement in the range will depend on a candidate’s job-related skills, experience, and expertise, as evaluated during the interview process.
