UW Medicine Pathology brings together state-of-the-art technology and highly trained, world renowned personnel to provide comprehensive diagnostic and personalized service to physicians, community hospitals, independent laboratories, and other health care organizations. Our operations are based at the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, South Lake Union, Northwest Hospital and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Pathology faculty members also serve at Seattle Children's Hospital, the Veteran’s Administration Puget Sound Healthcare System, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. These collaborative efforts have generated innovative, translational studies in the basic mechanisms of disease as they apply to diagnostic pathology.

The UW BioRepository and Integrated Neuropathology (BRaIN) Research Laboratory has an outstanding opportunity for a full time Research Scientist/Engineer 1. This is an excellent opportunity for the scientist to participate in research activities primarily associated with quantitative assays associated with human brain tissue and cells with additional opportunity to participate in human research brain examination including brain removal, dissection, preservation, and processing, and complex procedures for services such as histology, brain autopsy, and/or specialized quantitative fluid and tissue based assays.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator and senior lab staff, the research scientist 1 will: - perform slide preparation and scanning and image analytics of immunohistochemical stains (40%) - participate in/provide support for other laboratory projects, which may include human tissue protein extractions, protein measurements, and targeted and multiplexed immunoassays to determine molecular changes associated with neurodegeneration, neurotrauma, and dementia (20%), - participate in tissue clearing and staining for three dimensional microscopic reconstructions of brain injury and disease (10%), - in silico 3D reconstructions of microscopic and gross brain images (10%), - tissue processing for analysis by mass spectrometry and chromatography techniques, and other tissue analytics (20%).

The successful applicant will be required to use care and maintain instruments; perform quality control and quality assurance; perform research and assist in development of new procedures; monitor reagent use, and perform preventative maintenance on instruments according to prescribed protocols. The successful applicant will be expected to organize and maintain updated laboratory notebook and databases on research projects and to navigate the laboratory and pathology computer networks, participate in lab and other meetings, provide regular progress updates, review work lists and prioritize work in conjunction with the PI and BRaIN lab leads, and interact with the research team and collaborators. For additional compensation, after hours call for research brain autopsies may be available, although participation in this aspect of the BRaIN lab is highly competitive. Finally, the research scientist will be expected to assist with a variety of special projects, and research related duties as assigned in a research environment where innovation and novel analytic applications form the foundation of an integrated model of precision neuropathology.

This position has operational access to patient health information and clinical materials including pathology specimens and archival blocks and slides, and for these activities must adhere to the covered entity HIPPA Privacy and CLIA rules and has 'dotted line' reporting to the CLIA certificate holders and applicable clinical laboratory management staff. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Minimum education requirement of a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, biology, other biological sciences or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. AND 1 year's experience in a related area

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. Desired:
Experience with any or all of the following: Immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence staining, protein assays and solution phase immunoassays, molecular applications including tissue and single cell RNA and DNA sequencing, brightfield or fluorescence microscopy.

Conditions of Employment:
UW Research Scientists are essential to BRaIN research laboratory activities; this position may occasionally require work after-hours, weekends and or outside normal business hours.
