The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is seeking a Research Scientist/Engineer 1 (NE S UAW RSE).
This position primarily supports Dr. Sean Murphy’s Malaria Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory, which supports malaria clinical trials, field studies, and pre-clinical studies to help develop drugs/vaccines/diagnostics and to accelerate the elimination of malaria globally by routinely performing laboratory established molecular assays. Projects supported include clinical trials of candidate malaria products, malaria epidemiology studies, and a diagnostic biomarker tool qualification program. The position also provides periodic support for other Murphy Laboratory experiments aimed at malaria immunology projects.
Job Description: Under general supervision, perform and support established molecular assays for clinical trials and research studies (80%); • Regularly perform nucleic acid extraction, PCR and sequencing assays, evaluate assay performance and prepare required documentation as according to established laboratory protocols • Collaborate closely with team to come up with an agreed-upon workflow to efficiently process specimen • Regularly perform instrument and facility maintenance as part of established laboratory QC program • Specimen management; receive, sort, inventory, process and store biological specimens as they arrive • Participate in the validation of assay modifications or new sample types • Preparation and quality control of samples, standards, reagents and chemicals which may involve tube labeling and repetitive movements • Participate in trainings and compliance activities mandatory for the personnel working in CLIA/CAP accredited laboratories. • Collect and enter data into Excel programs or other biostatistical software/ language. • Support analysis of data to make significant scientific decision when requested • Assist in preparation of presentations and submissions
Under general supervision, perform other laboratory established protocols in support of other laboratory projects on an as-needed basis (10%): • Assist in reagent and chemical preparation • Assist in processing animal tissue and/or blood for downstream work
General Lab Operations (10%): • Facilitate transfer and tracking of study samples to and from the lab • Respond to and forward inquiries from the clinic to clinical assay performing staff • Participate in demonstrating laboratory techniques to students and new employees • Regularly conduct a lab-assigned lab duty • Monitor inventory of laboratory supplies and restock in a timely manner • Attend, participate, and present in lab meetings
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, or other related scientific discipline AND one (1) year of related experience performing and supporting established molecular assays OR the combination of education and experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. Specific knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job satisfactorily include: • Measurement skills • Attention to detail • Good record keeping skills • Microsoft Word/Excel/Power Point • Good time management skills • Excels at working with a team • Comfortable working with human and animal biological specimens • Use of pipette for hours • Operation of standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges • Willingness to work late afternoon hours • Willingness to work rare weekend shifts
Knowledge, skills and abilities that are desirable, providing for an enhanced level of job performance, include: • Good laboratory practice (GLP) skills • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory environment • Previous experience with PCR, reverse-transcriptase PCR and/or sequencing • Ability to occasionally travel to other UW facilities such as Renton and Montlake as part of a project • Knowledge of QC parameters, including mathematical concepts of mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation • Experience with Excel and Word for data entry and data analysis • Experience with or willingness to learn R
