The Department of Pharmacology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist Engineer 1 to aid in the performance of NIH funded research on opioid receptor pharmacology and the cellular and molecular basis for the dysphoric effects of stress, with the ultimate goal of developing more targeted pharmacological therapies to treat pain, depression, and addiction to drugs of abuse.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Research focuses and tasks for this position include but are not limited to:

Activities: 65%

  • Manage the breeding, weaning, tailing and genotyping of multiple lines of transgenic mice to support the evolving needs of the research group. Maintain accurate mouse colony records using Microsoft Excel.

  • Perform stereotaxic surgeries on mice to allow introduction of viral vectors or pharmacological agents to select brain regions.

  • Transcardially perfuse mice with fixative, slice and process brain tissue for fluorescence immunohistochemistry.

  • Preparation of experimental reagents.

  • Confocal microscopy and data analysis techniques

  • in vitro slice imaging and data analysis techniques

  • in vivo fiber photometry and data analysis techniquesCompliance, Analysis and Other Duties: 35%

  • Assist with preparation of animal care and use protocols, and interface with UW IACUC and Office of Animal Welfare as needed to maintain laboratory compliance.

  • Ordering laboratory supplies and equipment

  • Reading and extracting important facets of scientific research from applicable literature

  • Keeping detailed records, performing data calculation and analysis

  • Presenting data to the research group MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field and one year of experience Mice colonies for Scientific ResearchOR

  • Equivalent combination of education/experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience and willingness to perform surgery and conduct experiments on Mice.
