GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Registered Nurse 2 (E S SEIU 1199NW Res/HH) functions at a high level of professional nursing skill and judgment to provide safe and therapeutic patient care in multiple clinic settings (e.g., Immunization Clinic, Women's Clinic, Primary Care Clinic, ASAP); coordinates clinical services through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation.

This position is one that performs an essential function; therefore, Incumbent should make every effort to report to work in the event that the University suspends operations because of severe weather, natural disaster, or other emergency condition.

DUTIES:

  • Carries out established nursing assessments, screenings and related procedures; immunizations required for adults and children through all ages.

  • Demonstrates and maintains proficiency in the knowledge of vaccine preventable diseases.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of immunization practices following established protocols acquired through recent experience in both pediatric and adult immunizations.

  • Applies triage skills in an outpatient setting, both in person and by telephone: prioritizes acuity/urgency of patient's needs, and recognizes, responds to and manages emergency situations.

  • Using the nursing process and established protocols is able to provide assessments and care based on a patient's health history and evaluation.

  • Monitors the health status of patients and their response to therapeutic interventions.

  • Documents patient care delivery in the official medical records; acquires and maintains competency in the use of Hall Health Center's electronic medical record systems.

  • Provide clinical services based on scientific principles, published guidelines and regulatory guidelines, including but not limited to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, AAACN Telephone Triage Standards.

  • Demonstrates respect for patient rights and maintains privacy and confidentiality according to UW HIPAA policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrates behaviors that support the UW Medicine Patients Are First Service Culture Guidelines.

  • Attends clinical staff meetings when possible and is responsible for knowing their content FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Clinical Practice -- Delivers safe and therapeutic nursing care .

  • Practices nursing based on standards of professional practice.

  • Systematically employs the nursing process.

  • Demonstrates clinical judgment and decision making for a defined patient population.

  • Demonstrates competence in carrying out established nursing procedures, including but not limited to Intravenous therapy, Injections, monitoring nebulizer treatments, immunization administration, wound care, and other procedures common to Acute Care Clinics.

  • Prioritizes patient care based on acuity or urgency of patient's needs; patient's preferences or choice and available resources.

  • Teaches patient, family and others who will be involved in the patients' care, as appropriate.

  • Recognizes, responds to and manages emergency situations.

  • Coordinates and facilitates care with nurse colleagues, with other departments and disciplines, and with outside agencies, as indicated.

  • Documents patient care delivery according to HHC standards.

  • Uses ethical principles in making patient care decisions and determining nursing actions.

  • Bases clinical practice on scientific principles and research findings.

  • Identifies specific and general patient care issues, takes steps toward resolution, and communicates issues to the nurse manager or unit head.

  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team of providers, Patient Services Center and other Hall Health clinics to facilitate appropriate placement of patients with same day needs. Leadership

  • Uses Hall Health Center communications systems to maintain current information.

  • Maintains the clinic environment and equipment in a state that it is safe and usable.

  • Adheres to HHC attendance policy and to unit specific absence protocol.

  • Assumes responsibility for meeting Hall Health Center required mandatory in-services, e.g. fire, safety, workplace violence, CPR, infection control, Bloodborne Pathogen training, etc.

  • Assumes responsibility to renew and maintain current professional licensure.

  • Identifies specific and general patient care issues, takes steps toward resolution, and communicates issues to the Nurse Manager or unit head.

  • Collaborates with Patient Service Center and other clinical teams to facilitate appropriate placement of patients with same day needs.

  • Shares expertise and information through informal or formal publication, presentation, or community activities. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Able and willing to work flexible schedule to maintain level of service.

  • Communicates effectively with individuals and groups.

  • Skill in working independently and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams

  • Contributes to positive working relationships with other members of the health care team.

  • Knowledge and skill in time management, problem solving, multi-tasking, and prioritizing daily clinical/ administrative activities. • Recent experience providing direct patient care in ambulatory or acute care setting.

  • Knowledge of nursing process, skill in using a systematic approach to patient care that includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, consultation and referral.

  • Critical Thinking: able to make decisions based on sound nursing principles, experience, and confidence in own abilities. Grasps obvious and underlying aspects of situations and problems. Utilizes knowledge gained from evidence-based practice.

  • Manages patient care through appropriate delegation, supervision and resource management, including efficient use of own

  • Knowledge of immunization practices set forth by the Centers of Disease Control and ACIP.

  • Knowledge of vaccine-preventable diseases.

  • Recent experience in adult and pediatric immunization practices, including tuberculosis skin test administration/reading.

  • Knowledge of infectious disease management, control and safety standards, techniques in asepsis, safe disposal of biological and clinical materials.

  • Recognizes own stress and the impact on others. Identifies and manages stressors utilizing the guidance of others.

  • Basic computer knowledge and keyboarding skills; familiarity with Windows XP and Word. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 3 years experience with direct patient care in ambulatory care clinic, emergency room or acute care setting.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing

  • Experience with EPIC EHR

  • Experience in telephone triage

  • Experience in Mental Health

  • Experience in OB/GYN setting.

  • Experience in pediatric/well child outpatient setting

  • Experience in immunization administration: pediatric and adult

  • Experience in infection control and or communicable disease control

  • HHC encourages certification as Ambulatory Care Nurse. LEGAL REQUIREMENT:
