Summary: JH Kelly has grown into one of the largest Industrial and Commercial mechanical contractors in the Pacific Northwest and we are seeking an experienced Project Engineer to join our dynamic team in Seattle, WA. The ideal candidate should have 5 years of experience in project engineering, with a focus on mechanical systems.

The Project Engineer is the second phase towards becoming a Project Manager. A Project Engineer plays a key role in a team environment, learning preconstruction processes, design and virtual construction, fabrication workflows, field installation, and project turnover. These position ’ s responsibilities include understanding the project lifecycle, including cost elements such as change orders, assisting with estimating, scheduling updates, and writing RFIs to integrate cost and schedule impacts. The successful candidate possesses strong analytical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a proactive, detail-oriented approach to problem-solving. Assignment to a specific project may require work on-site in an assigned JH Kelly space for the duration of the project. Other projects may require a hybrid of on-site and in-office or all-office.

Salary Range: $30-$47 per hour (DOE), FLSA non-exempt (OT eligible).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learn, follow, and promote company safety and quality protocols.

  • Write and manage RFI’s and change orders.

  • Prepare submittals and maintain submittal log.

  • Assist in the preparation of project schedules.

  • Assist with estimating takeoffs, and with the purchase of materials and equipment.

  • Maintain as-built documents.

  • Budget set-up.

  • Interface and coordinate with designers and provide constructability advice regarding design.

  • Work with construction and design professionals in the main office and the job site.

  • Assist project managers with the coordination, review, and approval of project shop drawings and submittals in conjunction with project specifications.

  • Maintain current and accurate quantity tracking data.

  • Cost Control reporting and forecasting.

  • Take off quantities and prepare pricing for changes when so directed.

  • Thoroughly review all drawings, submittals, samples, and shop drawings, to ensure the end product will be in accordance with the contract.

  • Plan and coordinate work appropriately to facilitate the work permit process.

  • Review construction procedures and provide technical support for work.

  • Ensure construction work completed in-house and by sub-contractors complies with the contract.

  • Be directly involved with construction procedures, and represent JH Kelly at various meetings.

  • Perform field engineering for construction convenience items including calculation and design drafting when required.

  • Keep management informed of project status and scheduling.

  • Maintain proactive and positive relationships within the crafts including shop and field craft personnel.

  • Maintain proactive and positive relationships with customer representatives, vendors, suppliers and subcontractors, safety, CAD/BIM, accounting, IT, and all project teams.

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

    Experience / Qualifications:

  • Construction Management, Mechanical, Industrial, or Civil Engineering degree or equivalent experience or education.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in Field Engineering or Field Construction Management or related field. Preferred: Piping and Mechanical estimating experience.

  • Project Engineering experience in Commercial Construction.

  • Familiarity with Mechanical operations and or other applicable mechanical construction experience.

  • Understanding of Mechanical Engineering principles.

  • Proficient in reading P&ID’s and Piping Isometrics.

  • Fully proficient in Microsoft Office and Bluebeam, with intermediate skills in Excel

  • Scheduling experience and/or education.

  • Familiarity with Critical Path Method (CPM) Scheduling, using MS Project or comparable applications.

  • A solid working knowledge of Project Management, Construction Management, Construction Contracts, Quality Assurance/Quality Control, and Safety.

  • Job turnover experience.

    Physical Requirements:

    Physical requirements for this role include the ability to transition frequently between an office and a construction field setting. In the office, the individual must be able to sit for extended periods while working at a computer, performing repetitive tasks such as typing and using a mouse, and communicating by telephone. In the field, the individual must be capable of standing and walking for extended periods on various surfaces, including uneven terrain, and climbing stairs as required. The role also necessitates the ability to kneel, crouch, and crawl to view/inspect tight spaces, as well as occasionally lifting 40 pounds. Good vision and hearing are essential for reading plans, inspecting work, and communicating on-site. The individual must also be adaptable to working outdoors in various weather conditions, adhere to site specific dress code, and comply with safety requirements by wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots. Flexibility to travel between job sites and work outside regular business hours when necessary is also required.
