The Opportunity with McKinstry

We are seeking a highly skilled Payroll Operations Manager to lead our payroll team and ensure the accurate and timely in-house weekly processing of payroll across multiple states, including unionized employees. This role requires a strategic forward-thinking individual with strong leadership abilities with an extensive understanding of payroll laws and regulations.

Essential Job Functions

Management

  • Demonstrate the ability to lead and develop a team, making informed decisions and planning resources effectively through clear communication and actionable plans.

  • Manage and mentor a team of six payroll professionals, providing guidance, training, and performance evaluations to foster a collaborative and productive team environment.

  • Oversee and manage all aspects of in-house payroll processing across multiple states and for unionized employees, ensuring timely and accurate weekly payrolls.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as union agreements, and stay updated on changes in payroll laws and regulations.

  • Oversee daily workflow and ensure the accurate and timely processing of weekly payroll for multiple pay groups and all off-cycle payments.

  • Educate managers and employees on appropriate payroll and timekeeping processes, holding regular training sessions for new managers.

  • Ensure the timely and accurate execution of monthly union dues reporting.

  • Lead team efforts to support union agreement updates and execution.

Strategy:

  • Develop and implement resource plans to ensure adequate staffing and efficient workflow within the payroll department.

  • Develop and manage payroll processing objectives, compliance, system needs, policies, and resource needs to support the department.

  • Lead strategic efforts to achieve annual goals and establish annual business plans.

  • Establish and report to leadership on standardized KPI metrics to measure team success and identify operational areas of opportunity.

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry

  • Advanced knowledge and experience in payroll processing for multi-state, multi-entity exempt, hourly, and union staff for a company of 3,000 or more employees.

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Superior organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Experience in transitioning payroll processing tasks from in-house systems to third-party providers, ensuring a smooth and efficient transfer of responsibilities.

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and make decisions to ensure accurate and compliant outcomes.

  • Proficiency in breaking down complex concepts and explaining them clearly at all organizational levels.

  • Professional demeanor with good independent judgment and discretion.

  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Visio) is required; working knowledge of SharePoint is preferred.

  • Advanced knowledge of Excel is required.

  • Ten (10) years of experience in processing and managing payroll for a large company is required.

  • Experience in the construction industry is preferred.

  • CPP certification is preferred.

The pay range for this position is $80,100 - $134,400 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. Base pay information is based on market location.
