The School of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Patient Information Protection Compliance Specialist. In a technically complex area, the Patient Information Protection Compliance Specialist is responsible for performing the daily activities required for the operation of the privacy and information security content area. The Compliance Specialist utilizes independent judgment and professional level analysis in order to respond to inquiries, investigate complaints, conduct compliance audits, monitor regulatory changes, and develop and implement policies, procedures, and educational and outreach materials. Using statistical and data analysis, the Compliance Specialist develops conclusions and recommendations, performance metrics, trending and analysis, and strategic planning and analysis that inform the program’s risk assessments and risk mitigation strategies. Specific Duties and Responsibilities: Serve as a patient information privacy content expert for the UW Medicine enterprise. Serve as an essential point of contact with the Patient Information Privacy Program’s institutional partners, such as UW Health Sciences Risk Management, Enterprise Records and Health Information, Patient Financial Services, Patient Relations, UW Medicine and UW Information Security, UW Privacy Office, and UW Human Subjects Division. Utilizing independent judgment, respond to consultation requests, investigate allegations of non-compliance involving complex fact patterns and analysis, draft investigation reports, and work closely with management and human resources to evaluate necessary corrective actions. Ensure contracts satisfy regulatory requirements for business associates. Engage cross-departmental decision-making when necessary to resolve matters of shared concern. Maintain documentation of compliance actions, activities, or assessments (including investigations, patient rights, audits, process improvement projects, and corrective action plans) in accordance with state and federal law and institutional policies. Retain records in accordance with the UW Retention Schedule and department policy. Analyze program metrics in order to recommend process improvements to the Patient Information Privacy Program’s internal operations as well as external operational units. Lead in the development and implementation of the Patient Information Privacy Program’s work plans, policy development and review, education and outreach, and special projects as assigned. Monitor regulatory developments and assess impact to the Patient Information Privacy Program’s policies in order to maintain compliance and mitigate risk. Actively participate in UW Medicine committees where Patient Information Protection matters are addressed. Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree and at least 6 years of increasingly responsible related experience, including complaint investigation, training, and policy interpretation (or an equivalent combination of education and work experience). Additional Requirements:

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws related to patient privacy and information security.

  • Proficiency with MS Office applications, electronic medical records systems, databases, and similar information systems.

  • Successful experience in working both independently and in teams.

  • Proven leadership, communication, organizational, team-building and critical thinking skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish positive and courteous working relationships, effectively manage competing priorities, and accurately complete highly detailed work.

  • Ability to work within a complex environment and leverage resources to meet the needs of clients, customers, and coworkers.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with all levels of management and medical staff.

  • Ability to follow established guidelines and policies when making decisions and demonstrate sound judgment in making decisions when there is no precedent/guideline.

  • Demonstrated problem solving skills: Consider problems from all perspectives, and thoughtfully and responsibly consider all relevant impacts and implications before making a decision; make effective and timely decisions, even with limited data and without unnecessarily referring to others; recognize who needs to be involved in decisions and engage them when appropriate.

  • Effectively contribute to projects in a shared leadership model.

  • Ability to handle highly confidential information in a professional manner. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements. DESIRED REQUIREMENTS

  • Certification in healthcare compliance, privacy or security.

  • Advanced degree in hospital administration or law.

  • Experience in an academic healthcare environment.

  • Proficiency with electronic medical records systems, databases, and related automated systems.

  • Knowledge of investigative and auditing principles.

  • Clinical experience is desirable.
