This role is part of the Tools and Operations Engineering Team within the DE&E Business Operations organization. Job Summary:

As a Manager of Software Engineering, you will be accountable for the management, performance, and results of a team of software engineers within Business Operations. A Software Engineering Manager will leverage departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges. Candidates for this role will be required to make decisions that are guided by policies, procedures and business plans; while also receiving guidance from their direct manager. The individual will also be responsible for providing technical guidance and oversight to employees, colleagues and/or customers, and be able to step in and contribute directly to technical work when needed. A manager is expected to have hands-on experience of all technologies in use and being implemented to achieve a section of work. They should keep themselves technically relevant by coding at least part time, thereby retaining an in-depth understanding of concepts, theories and principles in their specialty and basic knowledge of other specialties.

Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:

  • Manages a team of software engineers responsible for providing desired functionality to assigned products or services.

  • Manages the development, testing and implementation of software that meets established specifications on time and within budget. Ensures that features deployed have technical integrity and stability.

  • Accountable for day-to-day performance of team, operation and expected results.

  • Responsible for team budget

  • Responsible for tactical execution of business objectives

  • Responsible for ensuring team has appropriate & high technical competence through headcount planning, recruitment, career development and performance assessment.

  • Leads the innovation, development and improvement of tactical work for their section of work.

  • Outcomes managed have an impact on the assigned section of work.

  • Allocates available engineers/staff and delegates assignments in order to ensure work is completed and deliverables are met Interacts with direct reports and peers in management / customers / vendors to share information and improve cross-departmental processes.

  • Typically manages individual contributors and/or employees who have taken on mentorship or daily oversight of more junior employees.

  • Impacts the level of service and the team’s ability to meet quality, volume, and timeliness objectives. Guided by policies, resource requirements, budgets and the business plan.

  • Guides, influences and persuades others either internally in other areas or externally with customers or agencies.

Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:

​​ Minimum Qualifications

  • Typically has 8 or more years of technical experience with at least 2 years of technical and engineering leadership experience.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field preferred, or equivalent training or work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related technical discipline is highly desirable

  • Experience working with vendor teams to deliver high quality results

The hiring range for this position is $172,300.00 to $231,100.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
