This position requires a highly effective and skilled clinician who can build strong collaborations between departments in order to develop quality and safety goals, collaboratively establish standard operating procedures covering all critical aspects of clinical service and develop and implement systems and processes to monitor compliance with these procedures. As needed, this position will generate recommendations to address deficiencies in compliance with applicable regulations.

Provides leadership to clinical and administrative staff of the BMT program that reflects the mission, vision and philosophy of the institution. Oversees daily operations of the BMT Program.
Collaborates between inpatient and outpatient aspects of the stem cell transplant program.
Maintains clinical competency as a BMT Nurse Clinician. Serves as a clinical resource for Division of Hematology and Swedish Medical Center.
Oversees quality assurance and improvements for the Stem Cell Transplant program. Collects and analyzes data. Initiates action plans as necessary to improve performance. Participates in hospital-wide quality improvement activities and survey processes. Ensures that quality care is being delivered at all times. Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
Works cooperatively with all Swedish Medical Center and Swedish Cancer Institute leaders. Collaborates with community leaders of many disciplines to meet customer needs and promote the development of BMT services and staff.
Reviews monthly financial reports and is able to justify/explain variances. Balances quality and cost in making decisions on how resources are utilized and budgeted. Understands requirements of BMT reimbursement including coding and billing requirements. Oversees pre-authorizations and pre-certifications.
Reviews aggregate data for the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) and the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplant (ASBMT). Compiles and completes reports as necessary.
Responsible for marketing the stem cell transplant program locally and regionally. This is to include addressing customer service issues and the pursuit and maintenance of new business in conjunction with the Physician Division Chair and the Oncology Service Line Director. Participates in long range strategic planning and marketing in collaboration with Swedish Medical Center marketing department and the Swedish Cancer Institute Business Development Project Manager.
Assists with patient/staff/physician satisfaction activities. Reviews patient satisfaction data and comments monthly and shares with staff. Implements activities to improve the patient/family experience at Swedish Medical Center and the Swedish Cancer Institute.
Leads, attends and actively participates on assigned committees.
Delegates appropriately.
Assists with policy and procedure development, review and revision. Communicates new and revised policies and procedures to staff.
Identifies patients who are potentially eligible for research studies and makes referrals to the clinical research department; disseminates protocol information and assists with protocol compliance.
Attends and participates in weekly interdisciplinary patient care meetings. Assists in preparing information pertinent to meeting.
Standards and Accreditation Compliance - assistance in maintenance of Joint Commission, FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and state accreditation requirements.
Responsible for the FACT (Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy) preparation and process, including site visits, and oversees the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Provides opportunities for staff education and development. Maintains Oncology Certification. Maintains membership and involvement in the Oncology Nursing Society. Participates in Oncology education offerings such as the ONS chemotherapy/biotherapy course, annual Oncology skills fair, etc.
Maintains professional development by actively seeking opportunities for continued learning.
Additional Stem Cell Transplant activities, in conjunction with BMT Coordinator:
Monitors patient/family before, during and after transplantation for physical, emotional, psychosocial, and financial needs and intervenes when appropriate. Refers patients to members of the BMT team (pharmacist, social work, nutritionist, oncology support team, and financial advisors) as needed, and/or utilizes community resources when appropriate.
Coordinates the patient pre-admission work-up and visits. Gathers and reviews all pertinent clinical information (including past treatments and outcomes) and presents this to the transplant physician with special notes to abnormal results.
Collaborates with direct health care providers to establish plan of care, facilitates continuity of care across departments (both in-patient and out-patient) within hospital and home health providers.
Coordinates all services for BMT and targeted Blood Cancer patients, and oversees National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) processes as needed. Coordinates the transfer of patient care from Stem Cell Transplant Program back to referring physician and is responsible for long-term follow-up, which includes but is not limited to: periodic updates on patient condition, coordinating follow-up visits with Stem Cell Transplant physician and referring physician, and coordinating provision of post-discharge necessary services.
Educates patients and their families, to assist understanding of the disease, and processes and procedures surrounding pre- and post-transplant issues.
Acts as a resource for members of the interdisciplinary team on transplant care and protocols to promote positive outcomes for BMT patients.
Communicates with interdisciplinary team members, patients and families, and payors in a timely manner to ensure comprehensive documentation.
Performs admissions and continued stay reviews as needed.
Position Leadership and Quality Accountabilities:
- Acts as an advocate for patient’s benefits. Manages outpatient drug benefits. Investigates formulary and obtains overrides if needed. Identifies need for indigent drug program and coordinates the application process.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing degree (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing
Master's Degree in Nursing or equivalent educ/experience
Coursework/Training: Training in QA/QI activities.
Upon hire: Washington Registered Nurse License.
Upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association.
3 years experience in Hematology Oncology.
3 years Transplantation experience.
Experience and focus on BMT Transplant and apheresis.
