Port of Seattle Assistant Civil Engineering Technician in Seattle, Washington
Some of what you'll be doing:
As an Assistant Civil Engineering Technician, you will function as a member of a surveying crew that performs technical work involving the various phases of surveying for design, construction, topographic, hydrographic, geospatial control points, and as-built surveys under the supervision of the Senior Civil Engineering Technician.
You will support the crew by organizing work vehicles, keeping supplies stocked, maintaining equipment, charging batteries, and completing other tasks assigned by senior staff members.
You will support construction efforts by setting points and collecting as-builts.
You will identify topographical elements for the collection of data, cut and clear brush, open and measure utility structures, and set points for control.
You will operate various survey equipment in the field for data collection. This includes total stations, digital levels, GPS, digital scanners, distance measurement tools, hydrographic equipment and 360-degree camera equipment.
You will record, download, organize, and process field data.
You will leverage survey software programs and Microsoft Office programs, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams to manage data, communicate, and attend meetings.
Who you are:
Experienced – You have three (3) months of experience supporting survey operations.
Desired – We hope you have a certificate in surveying or civil engineering technology.

Proficient – You have basic proficiency in surveying principles, techniques, and mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry). You are familiar with various surveys, including topography, 3D scanning, construction staking, as-built, jet line and bathymetry. You have a basic understanding of survey equipment including its features, applications, practices, and terminology and are knowledgeable about safety procedures for survey work.
Efficient Communicator – You are skilled at written and verbal communication with diverse individuals that have various levels of knowledge on land surveying. You can work collaboratively and effectively with diverse groups and individuals within and external to the Port.
Critical Thinker – You utilize critical thinking and judgement to define, analyze and resolve problems or issues. You show attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
Technologically Skilled – You have knowledge of the operation of all types of survey equipment (total stations, digital levels, GPS, scanners, cameras) and of computer applications and data collection software (Microsoft Office, LisCad, Captivate, etc.).
What else you need to know:
Driver’s License – You will need a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, is required in order to travel locally to project sites.
Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (40 hours per week.
Work Environment – You will generally work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. You may be exposed to areas of high noise, various hazardous materials, work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
Overtime Eligible – You are eligible for overtime pay in this role.
Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.
Security Requirements – You will also be required to obtain a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Customs Seal within 30 days of hire.
Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within the first three months of employment.
