The Applied Science Manager will play a critical role in leading the research, development, and implementation of solutions to key challenges in developing conversational AI systems that can understand and communicate with customers in a natural and contextually appropriate manner. This involves tackling complex problems in areas such as multi-turn dialogue management, knowledge grounding, and open-ended generation.

Key job responsibilities

As the manager of Applied Science, you are responsible for defining and executing on the science vision. You will lead teams of scientists and engineers to work backwards from customer needs and translate product ideas into concrete deliverables. You will be the thought leader for inventing scalable AI solutions that support Customer Service Self Service and Automation. You will solve hard problems, advance science at Amazon, and be the leading innovator in interaction quality. In this role you will collaborate with applied scientists, engineers, product managers, and UX designers to shape interaction quality measurement and improvement.

About the team

Join our team of scientists and engineers who develop and deploy LLM-based Conversational AI systems to enhance Amazon's customer service experience and effectiveness. We work on innovative solutions that help customers solve their issues and get their questions answered efficiently, and associate-facing products that support our customer service associate workforce.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of scientists or machine learning engineers management experience

  • Knowledge of ML, NLP, Information Retrieval and Analytics

  • PhD, or Master's degree and 4+ years experience in CS, CE, ML or related field

  • Experience programming in Python, Java, C++ or related language

  • Experience in building natural language processing systems to solve business problems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application

  • Experience building complex software systems, especially involving deep learning, machine learning and computer vision, that have been successfully delivered to customers

  • PhD in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $165,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $286,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
