Position description

The administrator occupies a unique leadership role within the organization. One of the successes of Mayo has been the collegiality and mutual support demonstrated by physician and administrative leadership. This partnership brings together the clinical and managerial talents necessary to achieve the Mayo Clinic strategic and operating plan. The administrative and physician/scientist leadership roles cannot be separated. The purpose of the partnership is to: translate the institutional vision to meaningful and effective operational responses; bring an institutional perspective to daily decisions and to bring an operational perspective and experience back to the institution; see, initiate and organize opportunities to improve service and quality and to act as a catalyst for realizing these improvements; act as a facilitator, champion and generator of new ideas and a mediator on difficult issues; bring awareness of current external issues such as reimbursement, legislative, alternative delivery modes, etc.; assist physician/scientist and allied health staff in developing leadership, managerial skills and succession planning; have adequate knowledge and perspective of Mayo Clinic and business operations to know when and where to acquire additional input and expertise; provide financial oversight of department. The administrator may provide direct patient care, contingent upon maintaining appropriate licensure and competencies.

This position will be based within Research at Mayo Clinic Arizona. The Research Operations Administrator is the administrative leader who serves a critical role in department activities, innovation, and process efficiencies; all essential to meet the department's research strategic goals.

  • Provides oversight of a large and complex program, lab, division, or department.

  • Partners closely with physician investigators and clinical practice leaders to help advance research.

  • Performs duties independently and initiates bold judgement in handling a variety of management issues.

  • Serves as a key member of the leadership team with a primary focus on the business administration, management of allied health staff, program budget development and oversight, operational and strategic planning, execution and implementation of policies and systems.

  • Direct reports include managers, supervisors, research technicians and/or other research personnel.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in business, health care administration or related field required.

  • Five years healthcare management or related industry experience to include people, projects or programs required.

  • Operational experience must include demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment with physician, scientist, educator, administrative, supervisory, and allied health staff.

  • Must have demonstrated leadership competencies management (e.g. staff, change, complex issues) and operations.

  • Prior research leadership or clinical studies experience, preferred.

  • Knowledge of extramural funding processes, preferred

  • Prior experience working in a healthcare setting or university medical centers, preferred.

  • For Operations Administrators hired prior to March 2012, a minimum education requirement is a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred.

Additional qualifications

  • Incumbents may be expected to rotate through a variety of clinical department or division assignments with the duration of the rotation usually lasting 3-6 years.

Compensation Detail

Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum salary every 2 weeks is approx $5117.60, based on a full-time position.
