Ellis Medicine Lead Mental Health Assistant III in Schenectady, New York

The Lead Mental Health Assistant (MHA) is part of the inpatient mental health leadership and patient care team. Under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse, the Lead MHA provides child, adolescent, and adult patient supervision in a treatment milieu. Assists in the maintenance of a safe and secure environment that enhances treatment. Provides care to patients in a manner that promotes safety, comfort, and a therapeutic environment. The Lead MHA will be responsible for educating, coaching, and mentoring MHA staff, and signing off of orientation and annual competencies for MHAs .

The Lead MHA will directly supervise the other MHAs. The Lead MHA will be a Lead MHA I if they oversee one unit. If the Lead MHA oversees two or more units, they will be a Lead MHA II. If the Lead MHA performs phlebotomy and/or is a Crisis Intervention Trainer, they will move up to a Lead MHA III.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S):

  • High School Degree Required; Bachelors Preferred

  • 5+ years experience in the mental health field.

  • Precepting skills required.

  • Healthcare experience, specifically in a behavioral health setting highly preferred.

  • Experience in services, programs or agencies that provide direct support preferred.

  • Relevant experience in other environments may include mentoring, teaching, or coaching.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong Interpersonal and time management skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance. Participate in physical therapeutic activities such as but not limited to kicking, running, stretching, or dancing. Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION

  • The Lead MHA will support the treatment team in maintaining a therapeutic milieu.

  • The Lead MHA will support the Charge RN on shift in organizing unit activities and patient care assignments. Will delegate tasks to MHAs as appropriate to ensure safe and therapeutic milieu is always maintained.

  • The Lead MHA will be responsible for covering breaks/rest periods for MHAs on assigned shift.

  • The Lead MHA will perform assigned patient care activities and will aid with all aspects of patient’s personal care and assist with providing patient nourishment.

  • The Lead MHA will obtain, and record objective patient data and patient care activities performed on the appropriate form in the medical record.

  • The Lead MHA will assist with patient activity using correct body mechanics and transfer techniques.

  • The Lead MHA will act as a liaison between the patient and the patient’s treatment team, ensuring all psychosocial needs are met.

  • The Lead MHA will perform safety checks every 15 minutes as assigned, to ensure safety of all patients.

  • The Lead MHA will perform daily room checks, daily environmental safety checks, and thoroughly check personal belongings (upon admission) to always ensure safety on the unit.

  • The Lead MHA will perform one to one observation for patient protection and communicate observations, maintain a clean, safe environment for the patient and will assist in maintaining a neat, well organized work area.

  • The Lead MHA will independently lead therapeutic groups and unit activities and document on the appropriate form in the medical record. Will coach and mentor other MHAs to independently lead therapeutic groups and activities.

  • The Lead MHA will demonstrate expertise in de-escalation techniques and respond to code situations.

  • The Lead MHA will perform phlebotomy, and collect and identify laboratory specimens.

  • Adheres to the policies and procedures as outlined in the Exposure Control Manual regarding:

  • Standard Precautions

  • Blood borne Pathogens.

  • Disposal of needles, syringes, and sharps

  • Cleanup procedures for blood and body fluid spills, storage, handling, and disposal of medical waste.

  • Will successfully complete and pass annual competency requirements.

Salary Range: $17.46-$25.32/hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
