Position Summary
The nuclear medicine technologist prepares and administers radioactive isotopes to patients, in specialized studies of body organs and/or laboratory analysis. They also provide technical support to other nuclear medicine professionals and Physicians in the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients, for nuclear therapeutic or imaging purposes
Education, License, & Cert
High School and graduation from an accredited Radiologic Technology program. AAS degree preferred. Certification required; ARRT(R), Advanced certification (ARRT(N)) or NMTCB.
Experience
Minimum of three months preferred. Registered technologist in a Radiology Department of a general acute-care hospital.
Essential Functions
Dose management and administration-. a. Prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic procedures. b. Prepare therapeutic doses for administration by radiologist.
Diagnostic Imaging and processing.
a. Acquire and process nuclear medicine scans utilizing computerized single and multi-head SPECT/CT gamma cameras. Maintain the service and repair records per unit, as required.
b. Perform laboratory procedures (Schilling’s tests, RBC/plasma volumes, RAIU determinations) according to procedure manual.
c. Checks request to ascertain appropriateness of exam as it relates to patient’s history. Bring to radiologist’s attention any that are questionable.
d. Works with radiologist section chief to define and develop protocols pertaining to existing and/or new procedures, new equipment. Assist in preparing patients for cardiovascular stress tests (IV set up, ECG prep, etc.). With radiology nurse, exercise patient on treadmill, monitor ECG, administer radiopharmaceutical during exercise
Daily equipment quality control a. Perform daily and quarterly Q.A. procedures on equipment and maintain records of same. b. Maintain equipment and procure repairs, as needed.
Radiation safety/compliance a. Maintain records of all radioactive material in department from reception to use of and then to final disposal b. Properly dispose of used radioactive material through return to manufacturer or by holding until proper disposal limits have been reached. c. Enforce radiation and general safety rules and regulations.
Preparation and administration of radiopharmaceutical therapy
Other Duties
Explain procedures to patients, medical personnel and others so as to ensure cooperation in scheduling and performance of procedures
Procure and maintain inventory of radiopharmaceuticals and other items needed to ensure operation of department.
Ability to work alone (on call) and get job done in an efficient manner.
Able to be in the department within 30 minutes after being called for a procedure.
Maintain other records with the RSO as required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other regulatory agencies.
Track patients and studies utilizing RIS, NMIS and PACS systems.
