Sarasota County Government Planner II - Zoning in Sarasota, Florida

In the Planner II- Zoning role you will work within the Planning and Zoning Division of the Planning and Development Services Department and will primarily work on review of rezones, special exceptions, and site development applications for compliance with zoning regulations contained in the Unified Development Code (UDC). You will also assist with, track, and make recommendations on UDC amendments, assisting in the work product, including participation and presentation at public hearings. In this role you will also assist with research, strategic plan items, and special projects as needed. Administration

  • Perform as lead Zoning reviewer for Rezones and Special Exception reviews.

  • Assist in site development review. Assist as needed in other permit zoning reviews.

  • Interact with citizens and clients relating to property usage, setbacks, etc. Participate in Zoner of the Day.

  • Provide guidance to Zoning Plans Reviewers and assists in answering more complex Zoning inquiries.

  • Assist with research and drafting proposed language/text revisions to the UDC.

  • Assist in review and processing of public and privately initiated text amendments to the UDC.

  • Assist in research and analysis/recommended action on Board Assignments.

  • Research/draft Zoning Letters of Determination, appeals, development reviews.

  • Provide support to the Board of Zoning Appeals under the supervision of the Zoning Administrator and/or Assistant Zoning Administrator, as needed.

Public Involvement/Citizen Engagement

  • Participate as Zoning Representative at bi-weekly Development Review Coordination Meetings.

  • Participate in workshops and educational programs and meetings with developers and neighborhood associations.

  • Assist Code Enforcement Officers with issuance of violation code citations.

Business Planning/Implementation

  • Assist in answering permit review questions.

  • Assist with ensuring performance targets are met.

  • Help Zoning Supervisor monitor daily workload/performance of Zoning Plans Reviewers.

  • Monitor processes for improved efficiencies.

    E-Work/Hybrid Work: Currently this position is eligible to e-work up to 2 days per week! After you complete your first six months, contingent on work requirements and other factors, you’ll be eligible for this fantastic benefit.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

About You

To thrive in this position, you must have-

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Planning, Land Use, Geography or closely aligned and related field and a minimum of four (4) years related professional planning a n d z o n i n g experience.

  • A Master's degree may substitute for one year or the required experience.

  • Planning and zoning experience can substitute for education on a year-for-year basis depending on the type of experience .

About Everything Else

Starting Pay Range: $61,131.20 - $70,012.80 based on experience
