Amazon Software Development Engineer, JDK in Santa Clara, California

Description

Are you passionate about Open Source? Would you like to work on a widely-used project used to run critical services across the Internet? Are you curious about new technologies, especially around operating systems, hardware platforms, deployment technologies, infrastructure, and automation? The Amazon Corretto team is looking for engineers to work on features in these areas for the Corretto OpenJDK distribution.

As a Software Development Engineer on the team, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining, enhancing, and releasing Corretto JDK. You will actively participate in the OpenJDK and Corretto user communities, work on mission-critical infrastructure, automation, tooling, and hardware. You will develop best practices, refine operational procedures, scale operations, and continuously identify growth areas within the existing frameworks, tools, and processes to develop new technical mechanisms to optimize our operations. You will learn about new operating systems, platforms, and AWS services. You will deep dive to root cause customer issues and work closely with top engineers at Amazon and service owners who provide Corretto-based services to meet customer needs.

An ideal candidate is autonomous, detail-oriented, possesses strong written and verbal communication skills, and has experience in designing, building, delivering, and maintaining critical software systems. You will guide the entire lifecycle of releases, from creation to deployment, ensuring the security of the release process and fostering a security-aware culture. This position offers the unique opportunity to contribute to OpenJDK, an open-source software used by hundreds of millions of developers.

EVEN IF YOU ONLY MEET SOME OF THE REQUIREMENTS, OR BELIEVE YOU AREN’T EXPERIENCED ENOUGH, WE ARE STILL INTERESTED IN HEARING FROM YOU. We believe that a solid technical foundation and a strong interest in the subject matter can make you successful on the team and we have the opportunities to help you learn and grow in this space. Knowledge and experience in related technologies are generally applicable and valuable.

About Amazon Corretto

Java is used for the majority of services in Amazon and nearly all public-facing AWS services. Because of this, we have a vested interest in running the best-possible JDK in areas like security and performance. In 2018, the AWS JDK team migrated Amazon's default JDK to OpenJDK. In order to do this we built rigorous security and quality mechanisms around OpenJDK. We are now able to apply security and Amazon custom patches to the internal OpenJDK as soon as they're available. We have also taken this knowledge and launched Amazon Corretto, Amazon's distribution of OpenJDK. With Corretto, we can make our enhancements to OpenJDK available to our customers and the OpenJDK community at large. Corretto team is composed of OpenJDK Authors, Committers, and Reviewers, some with decades of experience in JDK, languages, compilers, and managed runtimes. We learn about where to invest in OpenJDK from running some of the world’s largest Java services. We are firm believers in Open Source and are looking for like-minded people who are interested in working in the open with the community.
