Our location in Santa Clara, CA, currently has an opportunity for a Divisional Vice President, Health Economics & Reimbursement. This role will oversee global reimbursement strategy, and health economics and outcomes research department in the development of reimbursement strategies that support all products in U.S. and foreign markets. This leader will develop reimbursement and outcomes planning priorities, strategies and plans in collaboration with leaders of business unit, geographies, clinical research, regulatory affairs, product development, sales and marketing. The role will establish and implement strategies to demonstrate economic value of therapies and integrate these strategies into product development process. You will also advocate favorable government reimbursement and health policies and represent Abbott's interests before applicable U.S. and foreign government agencies (e.g. CMS, HAS, NICE etc.). This role will also implement successful private payer strategies for products. You will maintain awareness of global HER requirements, regulatory legislation and payor trends and requirements and assesses its impact on Abbott's business and products (in market and in development) division. Must represent Abbott externally with government agencies, opinion leaders and payor. Leads the development and implementation of programs providing reimbursement support to sales teams and to customers.
WHAT YOU’LL DO

Market Focus – Proactively understand and influence the external stakeholders such as payers, physicians, hospitals, market, government, competitors and consumers with impactful reimbursement and outcomes planning initiatives across multiple business units, geographies and sales teams. Think critically about local market dynamics. Develop intimate knowledge about the market and customer needs. Navigate complex compliance and regulatory environments. Stay current with industry trends and development. Stay current in marketing trends such as social media, multi-channels, digital/consumer marketing. Understand the needs of existing and emerging stakeholders and segments. Maximize the impact of marketing and market access efforts to grow business.
Financial Management – Identify and monitor key financial indicators to gauge performance. Anticipate and manage financial, distributor, governmental and commercial risks. Manage P&L to deliver financial commitments as well as optimize short-term performance and long-term growth. Conduct regular business reviews to ensure execution against plan.
Strategy Development and Execution – Develop and communicate a clear, forward thinking, customer-focused strategy for own scope of responsibilities given the complexity of the market. Translate divisional/functional strategies into a sustainable operating plan. Use the plan to create meaningful, actionable goals for teams and individuals. Execute the plan by clarifying KPIs, setting priorities, and using metrics to track progress. Inspire, motivate and engage the workforce to adopt the strategy. Integrate reimbursement strategies and health outcomes planning into product development, clinical trial and product launch processes
Designs and implements economic research studies for clinical trials that provide economic perspective for product portfolio decisions, marketing, product reimbursement strategies and regulatory agency submissions.
Operational Excellence – Acquire, allocate, and sustain the necessary resources (people, materials, equipment) to execute the current and long-term strategy. Operate in an effective and efficient manner. Ensure functions work together in an integrated manner to deliver results. Forge opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement to drive above-market top line sales growth and maximize efficiency and improve margin.
Compares and evaluates the economic value of products and therapies with the clinical and quality of life outcomes data from clinical trials and/or epidemiology studies.
Internal and External Stakeholder Management - Understand the needs and expectations of internal stakeholders (e.g. other GMs, functional leaders, senior leaders, etc.) and external stakeholders (e.g. regulatory/compliance entities, governments, associations, etc.). Initiate, maintain, and tactfully influence relationships with various medical and non-medical stakeholders. Align the interests of different stakeholders to drive common goals, driving aggressive reconciliation when necessary. Proactively engage key opinion leaders to shape and reinforce the Abbott brand and image. Proactively engage in building relationships to influence policy makers. Build and manage relationships with government affairs institutions. Represent self, equal to the Abbott brand, when in the community and with various external stakeholders.
Talent Management – Recruit, develop, and retain high-caliber talent. Identify and develop a team for reimbursement strategy and health economics and outcomes research. Recruit, coach and develop organizational talent focused on health policy, reimbursement strategy, health economics and outcomes planning. Keep the workforce motivated and engaged toward common goals. Anticipate capability trends in the field and prepare the Abbott-wide talent pipelines for both short- and long-term business needs. Challenge and grow people. Coach them to become self-sufficient and contribute at high levels. Ensure robust succession plans for own position and all key roles.
Works closely with product reimbursement to help develop strategies and marketing and pricing programs.
Works with clinical research to add health economics endpoints to clinical trials and biostatisticians to analyze and report study results.
Develop and maintain relationships with key decision makers at public and private payers; in collaboration with Abbott’s government affairs vice president, work with other key associations on reimbursement and health policy issues (e.g. CHI, AdvaMed, ACC, AHA, SCAI, HRS, etc.)
Build strategic partnerships with geography based personnel, marketing, sales, clinical science, and research and development
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING
Bachelors Degree (± 16 years) In related field an equivalent combination of education and work experience
Minimum 15 years experience in reimbursement or related field, preferably in medical device and/or pharmaceutical industry.
Previous management or project experience is required.
- Masters Degree or MBA or related field preferred an equivalent combination of education and work experience
