General Description

SUNY Niagara is seeking a dynamic and dedicated individual to join our college as a full-time, tenure-track, Communication Studies instructor in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Division. the selected candidate will be responsible for teaching 15 credit hours per semester and advising students throughout the academic year. Courses may include Writing for the Media, Public Relations, Digital Marketing and Analytics, Media Communication, Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, and Principles of Communication. Courses will be comprised of primarily face-to-face instruction; however, opportunities to teach in a variety of modalities (hybrid, asynchronous online, and hyflex) exist.

This individual will contribute discipline expertise in continuing to move the program forward in innovative ways. As a full-time faculty member at SUNY Niagara, successful candidates will demonstrate commitment to student success through academic excellence and participation in campus activities. In addition to teaching 15 credit hours per semester, the instructor will be responsible for student advisement, assisting in curriculum and course development, student recruitment and retention efforts, assessment of learning objectives, and participation in divisional and college activities.

The start date of this position will be August 29, 2024. The successful candidate will only be required to work 162 days per academic year (August – May) and will be provided with a winter break from mid-December to early January, and a Spring Break for one week in mid-March.

In addition to the base salary, there are avenues to increase compensation by teaching overload, teaching summer/winter courses, doing special assignments, etc. There is a tenure track pathway for promotion to higher level salaries of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor.

Typical Work Activities

• Provide instruction in the Communication Studies program with a focus on meeting all specified course outcomes and learning objectives.

• Maintain current knowledge of the teaching discipline and field of study as evidenced by active participation in professional organizations and professional development activities.

• Participate in campus-wide initiatives to support student recruitment and graduation goal attainment.

• Assist in maintaining currency of program curriculum and content offerings through development and revision of course syllabi.

• Utilize classroom technology and the College’s learning management system Brightspace.

• Assess course and program learning outcomes and submit appropriate documentation.

• Advise students in the program.

• Contribute meaningfully and regularly to departmental/divisional meetings, committees, taskforces, and college activities.

• Complete other duties as assigned

  Essential Functions

The successful candidate must be able to navigate relationships with diverse populations and teach a diverse student population. The ability to advise students for classes, transfer options and career advice in their field. Ability to be an active member in the division and serve on committees representing the division. Ability to speak in front of groups of people. Must be able to effectively communicate with students, colleagues, supervisors, and the campus community. Must be able to develop, prepare and present all required course material. Must be able to operate computers. Must be able to physically perform the duties of the position

Required Qualifications

• A Master’s Degree in Communication Studies or a closely related field

• Must have at least 1 year of full-time teaching experience at the post-secondary level

• Must have at least 1 year of professional experience in the field

  Desirable Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Communication Studies or a closely related field

• More than 1 year of face-to-face instruction at the college level

• More than 1 year of professional experience in the Communication field

• Experience teaching in a variety of modalities (face to face, asynchronous, hyflex)

• Experience teaching in a technology-enhanced classroom, and experience using a course management system such as Brightspace.

• Experience conducting academic advisement.
