  • Professional employment in developing and implementing post secondary education academic support services.

  • Experience in personnel supervision and evaluation, as well as program assessment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of field of developmental education, learning strategies, and study skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned graduate degree in related field including Adult Education, Developmental Education, Educational Leadership, Educational Psychology, Student Affairs, Professional Counseling, etc. from an accredited institution.

  • One-two years professional employment in developing and implementing post secondary education academic support services.

  • Two-five years of professional employment working with Supplemental Instruction (SI) including personnel supervision and evaluation.

  • Experience using a variety of educational e-tools such as Qualtrics, Canvas, Canva, etc.

  • Fluency in data analysis using Excel or other similar.

  • Presentation and public speaking experience.

  • Teaching experience in post secondary environment.

  • Tutoring / SI experience in post secondary environment.

Job Description

Responsible for the coordination, supervision, and evaluation of specific academic support services The successful candidate will be responsible for the management and supervision of SLAC’s nationally recognized Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, working with a student staff of more than 50 each semester in the supervision of the SI program, as well as all of SLAC’s Outreach and additional instructional programs. SLAC Outreach includes oversight of collaborative work on behalf of the department such as New Student and Family Orientation, Bobcat Welcome Week while Instructional Programs include responsibility for SLAC’s menu of instructional workshops serving faculty, staff, and student organizations. This position also oversees SLAC’s publicity and public relations activities by writing and/or editing new or existing text for on- and off-campus publications, as well as approving new PR initiatives through various methods including social media. The Assistant Director functions as part of the learning center’s professional staff team maintaining a productive and collaborative learning environment that involves university committee work, making presentations, assisting students, faculty, and staff with various academic success issues, and participating in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of student training programs, policies, and procedures.

Job Duties

  • Assist the Director of SLAC with strategic planning and implementation of program goals and objectives regarding staffing, facilities, services, funding / budget, etc. Meet with Director to discuss status of SI program, outreach program, publicity and public relations, check progress on specific assignments, resolve problems arising from needs of program staff.

  • Provide direct supervision to one full-time Student Development Specialist II – SI Coordinator, two graduate assistants, and 40+ undergraduate student SI Leaders.

  • Maintain and/or expand SI program by consulting with Director, SI Coordinator, selected deans, departmental chairs, faculty members, and staff. Supervise SI Coordinator’s implementation of SI program which includes the matching of student leaders with specific sections and professors of academic courses, creating master SI schedule, and posting master schedule on SLAC’s website. Supervise and participate in selection of graduate and undergraduate student SI staff (i.e., Graduate Assistant to SI, Senior SI Leaders, and Student SI leaders.).

  • Supervise and participate in training initiatives including SI Leader training and the annual Student Academic Support Programs ( SASP ) Conference.

  • Work with SI Coordinator, Graduate Assistant for SI, & SI Senior Leaders to solve problems, check program progress, plan staff meetings, and supervise SI program. Also consult with staff to assign tasks, counsel SI program student leadership, hold formal individual conferences and performance evaluation sessions, and discuss ways to encourage attendance and improve sessions.

  • Oversee budget for Supplemental Instruction program.

  • Assist in and oversee compilation of statistical data (attendance, grades, GPAs) for local and national SI program reports, as well as departmental infographic reporting. Supervise creation and analysis of electronic beginning of term surveys using Qualtrics.

  • Oversee, delegate, and schedule outreach programs and public relations. Create new and update existing menu of instructional workshop menu.

  • Function as a member of the SLAC professional staff team by attending staff meetings, provide consultation to students about their unique academic needs (i.e., learning/study skills and discipline specific skills), making referrals to appropriate campus resources, assist with training programs for all SLAC student workers, and promote SLAC by speaking to classes, student organizations, and faculty/staff about SLAC services and strategies for academic success. Serve on campus advisory committees such as New Student/Family Orientation, Academic Services Committee, and search committees as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.
