Position Description
Texas State University is seeking qualified applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor position of Professional Counseling beginning Fall 2025.
This position will involve teaching, research, service, and program support in a CACREP -accredited, master’s level Professional Counseling Program in Central Texas. This position is focused on a faculty member for our Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling ( MCFC ) degree track.
Specific responsibilities will include teaching courses leading to licensing in marriage, couple, and family counseling; maintaining an active and productive program of research; engaging in external funding submissions; and providing service to the program, department, university, and profession.
This position will include teaching core courses in our counseling program, with a particular focus on teaching MCFC Theories, Current Issues in MCFC , Assessment and Treatment in MCFC , MCFC -based clinical courses, and other courses as needed. The successful candidate will be headquartered on the main university campus in San Marcos and will teach courses on both the main university campus in San Marcos and at the university’s Round Rock campus.
The Professional Counseling Program is CACREP -accredited in three specialty areas: Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling; and School Counseling. Texas State University is a student-centered Hispanic Serving Institution of more than 38,000 students. The university holds a Carnegie classification of Doctoral University-High Research Activity and is engaged in a strategic plan to attain eligibility as a Research-1 (R1) university by elevating its national research profile. Texas State University is located along the beautiful San Marcos River. Required Qualifications
Required qualifications for Assistant Professor rank:
• An earned doctorate in Counselor Education from a CACREP -accredited program by employment date of hire.
• A demonstrated record of training and experience in marriage, couple, and family counseling
• A record of, or the demonstration of the potential for, research and publication at the national and/or international levels
• A record of, or the demonstration of the potential for, securing external funding for research
• A professional clinical license (e.g., Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist [ LMFT ], Licensed Professional Counselor [ LPC ]) or a provisional clinical license (e.g., LMFT Associate, LPC Associate) with a plan in place to complete the professional license in the State of Texas within two years
Required qualifications for Associate Professor rank:
• An earned doctorate in Counselor Education from a CACREP -accredited program by employment date of hire.
• A demonstrated record of training and experience in marriage, couple, and family counseling
• A documented record of sustained research and publication at the national and/or international levels
• A documented record of securing external funding
• A demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and service
• A professional clinical license (e.g., Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist [ LMFT ], Licensed Professional Counselor [ LPC ]) or a provisional clinical license (e.g., LMFT Associate, LPC Associate) with a plan in place to complete the professional license in the State of Texas within two years
The applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on university and department established standards, inclusive of a recommendation by the department’s Personnel Committee.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications for Assistant Professor rank:
• A documented record of securing external funding for research
• Experience teaching core courses in a CACREP -accredited program in the teaching areas listed above
• Designation as a clinical supervisor (e.g., LMFT -S, LPC -S) and experience providing clinical supervision in an academic setting
Preferred qualifications for Associate Professor rank:
• Experience teaching core courses in a CACREP -accredited program in the teaching areas listed above
• Designation as a clinical supervisor (e.g., LMFT -S; LPC -S) and experience providing clinical supervision in an academic setting
