Summary Employee will serve as a Medical Technician (Office Automation) within Laboratory Medicine Service located at the Veterans Healthcare System in San Francisco, CA. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following: Performs clerical duties, incudes: type blood bank records and patient requisition data using a computer terminal, retrieval of test data, test information, and reference values via the computer and communications via electric mail. Processes specimens for analysis, assuring physiological state of the properties are maintained. Specimens include microbiological (parasitology, mycology, mycobacterium, bacteriological examinations), and biological fluids (blood, urine, sputum, bone marrow, etc.) Performs phlebotomy by venipuncture or capillary puncture by patient bedside or lab-based testing such as glucose determinations and urinalysis. Prepares and advises patients on procedures for various specimen collection, e.g., timed blood, urine, stool, etc. Prepares specimens for reference laboratory analysis, identifies specific sample requirements for each test, i.e., temperature (room, refrigerated, frozen) to maintain integrity of sample. Electronically enters patient demographic data and tests requested, records priority status, e.g., stat or routine). Serves as a control point official, obligate control point fund expenditures, prepare procurement requests and reconciliation of purchases and payment invoices, and maintains inventory. Provides budget plan input on each control points to leadership. Performs other duties as necessary. Work Schedule: Full-Time, rotating various shifts, to include weekends and holidays. Qualifications SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Qualifying experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. In addition to the qualifying experience, specialized experience for this GS-6 grade level includes: preparing specimens for shipment assuring physiological state and integrity of specimens are maintained; performing clerical and computer duties in a laboratory setting, e.g., telephone assistance, data entry, retrieval and electronic mail communication of test data, inventory management; and performing phlebotomy on human patients. (Resume must clearly support responses provided to the online questionnaire to receive credit.) -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed Six months of graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience only in those instances where it is directly related to the position to be filled, such as instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology. -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience are also qualifying. -AND- TYPING PROFICIENCY: This position requires the skills of a qualified typist. In addition to meeting the experience and/or education requirements, you must be able to type at least 40 words per minute. -AND- ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
