Danforth Advisors Senior Consultant - Accounting Manager/Assistant Controller in San Diego, California

As a Danforth Senior Consultant, you would be deployed as an Accounting Manager/Assistant Controller for early-stage life science companies, including venture backed, near public, and publicly traded entities. Typically, Senior Consultants balance the demands of a few clients at a time, with the combined hours equating to a full-time position. This is an excellent opportunity to work with high growth, dynamic players in the biotech, medical device and health IT sectors. As a Danforth Senior Consultant, you will have access to the resources of the entire Danforth organization. You will work either independently with the client or with a team of Danforth professionals on engagements.

Potential Responsibilities:

The Senior Consultant will manage and oversee the daily operations of the accounting department including but not limited to:

  • Review, analyze, and process General Accounting transactions

  • Prepare, record, post, and review journal entries

  • Accounts payable/receivable. Oversee purchasing and accounts payable files including processing invoices, handling vendor payments and inquiries, check runs/bill pay, and preparing related correspondence

  • Support and manage monthly close process (General Ledger, account reconciliations, etc.)

  • Administer payroll

  • Contribute to audit preparation

  • Provide oversight to other accounting staff to ensure compliance and accuracy

  • Participate in other projects as deemed necessary by the client

  • Work closely with all levels of staff and vendors within the client organization

  • Cash forecasting/budgeting

  • Revenue and expenditure variance analysis (Income statement review/flux analysis)

  • Capital assets/fixed assets reconciliations

  • Establish and enforce proper accounting methods, policies and principles in accordance with US GAAP

  • Monitor and analyze accounting data and produce financial reports and statements

  • Proactively identify and problem-solve accounting issues. Improve systems, procedures and initiate corrective actions; Make recommendations for resolutions

  • Provide oversight to other accounting staff to ensure compliance and accuracy

  • Participate in other projects as deemed necessary by the client

  • Work closely with all levels of staff and vendors within the client organization

Requirements

  • 7+ years accounting and finance experience (Big 4/CPA Firm experience a plus)

  • 2+ years of experience working as an Accounting Manager, Accounting Supervisor, Assistant Controller or Finance Manager

  • Experience in Life Sciences industry

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, CPA or MBA a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to work in an early stage start-up, fast-paced environment

  • Computer Skills Required:

  • Microsoft Office- High proficiency in Excel a must

  • ERP- QuickBooks, NetSuite, Intacct, Great Plains or comparable

  • Computer Skills Highly Preferred:

  • Procurement- bill.com, Prendio or comparable

  • Equity platform- Carta, Equity Edge or comparable

  • Payroll platforms- Gusto, ADP or comparable

  • Expense Reporting- Concur, Expensify or comparable

  • Creative problem-solving skills including the ability to identify, recommend and implement solutions

  • Strong interpersonal and client relationship skills

  • Experience working as a consultant, or a sincere interest and commitment to consulting

  • IFRS experience a plus
