Scientist III, Molecular Biology – Research and Development

Location/Division Specific Information

Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Rapid Diagnostics Solutions (RDS) business is located in Sorrento Valley, San Diego, CA. We manufacture a rapid point-of-care, PCR-based, in vitro diagnostic assay system for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA (the virus responsible for COVID-19), providing testing results within 30 min in patient care settings.

How will you make an impact?

Do you have a passion for innovative ideas and groundbreaking discoveries? As Scientist III, Molecular Biology, you will join a highly collaborative and motivated R&D team of scientists and apply your molecular biology and assay design experience to the different stages of innovative IVD assay product development.

What will you do?

• Design complex experiments and troubleshoot problems

• Implement molecular biology laboratory and microbiology workflows

• Conduct verification and validation testing and support clinical studies

• Work with BSL-2 pathogens and human specimens including, but not limited to, whole blood, urine, and respiratory specimens

• Apply technical knowledge to develop and bring to market CLIA-waived diagnostic kits

• Work with Supervisors and Managers across the organization to effectively obtain and allocate resources to complete programs and projects on time

• Write and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), manufacturing instructions, and quality control test methods

How will you get here?

• Excellent laboratory skills

• Excellent documentation of experimental design and resultant data

• Be innovative and solve problems of a complex nature

• Solid understanding of word processing, spreadsheet programs, PowerPoint, and statistical analysis

• Be able to establish relationships both within RDS division and within the larger Thermo Fisher organization

• Assemble and present data to the assay development team or more senior leadership with RDS

Education and Experience

• PhD in Molecular Biology, Biology or Biochemistry with a minimum of 1-year relevant industry experience

• MS in Molecular Biology, Biology or Biochemistry with a minimum of 5 years relevant industry experience

• BS in Molecular Biology, Biology or Biochemistry with a minimum of 7 years relevant industry experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Proven experience developing PCR based assays from concept through technical transfer and commercial launch

• Mentor and “lead by example” for R&D and assay development project team members

• Ability to work long hours and execute under pressure with short turnaround times

• Ability to lift 25 lbs.
