Abbott Principal Scientist, Assay Technology Development in San Diego, California

Abbott is currently looking for a dynamic individual who will provide molecular diagnostic assay development experience and expertise to further populate the pipeline of tests to be performed on the platform. The Scientist will perform studies focused on the design, screening, development and optimization of novel assays, as well as expanding the capabilities of the core technology.


  • Independently perform assay development studies, from initial design through validation

  • Perform research related to improving, altering and expanding core technology capabilities including development of new molecular tools and implementation of mechanistic studies

  • Optimize sample preparation and detection approaches coupled to the core iNAT technologies

  • Proficiency in all areas of developing assays including sample preparation, quality control, specification setting, documentation and test execution

  • Investigate problem areas and areas of desirable product improvement

  • Work as a member of a team on assay development efforts, as well as on independent development and improvement projects

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with other scientists, chemists, engineers and manufacturing personnel

  • Demonstrate technical proficiency in molecular techniques

  • Perform high level analysis of experimental results

  • Provide data summaries, written reports and oral presentations to executives



  • Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or closely related field

  • Minimum eight years (Ph.D.) of assay development experience in an industrial setting

  • Hands-on nucleic acid amplification and detection technologies experience, with isothermal nucleic acid amplification experience a plus

  • Demonstrated proficiency and expertise in assay development through published papers, patents and/or presentations

  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects with minimal supervision

  • Experience with nucleic acid sample preparation methods, including rapid technologies

  • Work with clinical samples using molecular diagnostic technologies

  • Inventive, with ability to implement ideas in the laboratory

  • Good communication skills, capable of communicating ideas to colleagues

  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting capabilities, with good attention to detail

  • Ability to work as part of a team


  • Hands-on molecular diagnostic product development experience a plus

  • Knowledge of enzymatic and other protein assays is a plus
