Hourly Pay Range (Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum):

$33.090 - $42.697 - $52.303

The stated pay scale reflects the range that Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position.  The actual pay rate and pay grade for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant’s years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, other requirements for the position, and employer business practices.

What You Will Do

Assists patients, staff and physicians as needed to maintain a high level of efficiency of operations and customer service while providing quality care to a designated patient population. The Ortho Tech II performs duties at an expert level in the operating room and clinical setting under the direction of the Surgeon.

Required Qualifications

  • Other Completion of orthopedic technology program or other equivalent program (such as military training program)

  • Experience applying casts, splints and braces

  • Experience performing in the operating room as first and second assistant or scrub technician under the direct supervision of a surgeon.

  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) - American Heart Association -REQUIRED

  • Orthopedic Technologist Certified (OTC) - National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologists -REQUIRED

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 Years Full-time work experience in a hospital, clinic or office setting; or as an independent contractor working directly in the care of orthopedics patients

Essential Functions

  • Clinical skillsApplies knowledge and skill level within scope of practice.Fully successful in performing/assisting with all tests and procedures in assigned department.Prepare patient for examination or procedure. Obtains complete and accurate consent for procedures/surgery.Prepares and labels biopsies in a thorough and accurate manner.Accurately documents patient care per protocol.Listens to patients, collects pertinent information, recognizes the urgency of the patient's problem and routes to physicians.In partnership with physician, provides specific educational material and individual teaching.Uses universal precautions and applies knowledge of infection control policies and procedures.Provides assistance to PSRs in resolving issues related to front desk responsibilities including scheduling and telephone management. Acts as a positive role model and ensures appropriate service delivery.Participates in clinical projects as directed by the physician or manager.Partners with physicians to continuously learn and expand clinical knowledge base.Utilizes proper casting techniques, instructing patients in cast care and danger signs. Anticipates physicians' needs.Provides surgical assistant support in the operating room and assists with office procedures.Utilizes proper aseptic techniques, equipment set-ups, patient transfers and proper patient positioning.Assures operating room suite has proper equipment, x-rays, surgical pallets and reports.Assists with general office/patient functions: 1) Assists with patient phone calls; 2) Assists with ordering.

  • Department efficiency and effectivenessOrganizes and completes daily requirements and responsibilities.Ensures prompt and efficient return of messages according to established policy.Troubleshoots and resolves problem calls.Monitors patient flow, physician schedules and completes daily tasks to ensure quality and meet service standards.Follows policy and procedure for entering of orders and utilization of electronic medical records. Completes work within assigned hours.Respond to changing circumstances and prioritize patient needs.Responds to urgent and emergent situations in a calm and capable manner. Utilizes good judgment and problem solving ability.Ensures readiness of reports and information to maximize patient visit.Maintains appropriate supply levels. Cost conscious in usage.Participates in and prepares for site inspections and inventories.Completes department inventories per guidelines.Assists in other departments as assigned to meet staffing needs.

  • Quality initiativesCompletes Quality Assurance (QA) assignments and ensures overall department compliance with requirements. QA scores: 96-100% = Great; 90-95% = Good; 90% and below = Needs Improvement.

  • Skills competenciesSuccessfully completes Skills Competencies with a score “met†= Pass.

  • Technical skillsApplies knowledge of equipment and Information Systems applications.When necessary, activate emergency procedure per protocol - code, fire, etc.Documents patient care events in a thorough and accurate manner. Manages and completes AEHR tasks per prescribed timelines.Support and maintain knowledge of new applications and policies: AEHR, Abbreviations, etc.Using a keyboard, type proficiently and accurately; type a minimum of 30 words per minute with 0-2 errors; proof work.Maintain knowledge of scheduling requirements and support of front desk responsibilities.Operate and maintain department equipment per policy and procedure.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of major and minor orthopedic surgical procedures and techniques, table set-up, patient positioning and sterile techniques is required.

  • Must be experienced with articulating descriptions of patient conditions based on advanced understanding of anatomical structures and relationships with one another.

  • Advanced knowledge of theory and application of skin, skeletal and manual tractions.

  • Must have experience with the proper application of aseptic techniques in dressing changes, removal of sutures, staples, Steinman pins, K-wires, setting up surgical fields and draping in the operating room, reviewing x-rays, identifying most fractures and dislocations.

  • Must complete the Ortho Tech II checklist.
