Summary

The Marine Accounting Supervisor is responsible for the accounting of transportation and storage costs related to marine movements. This individual is required to ensure that personnel, procedures, controls and systems are in place and operating in a timely and effective manner for this portion of MPC’s business. The successful candidate will need to be a self-starting and driven individual, with strong leadership skills, customer service skills and the ability to work in a team environment. In addition to providing subject matter expertise to other accountants within the group, the successful candidate will work closely with front office traders and schedulers, transportation operations organizations, IT personnel, BP&A and other accounting departments as they complete their roles and responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review month end closeout checks, inventory reconcilements, journal entries, internal reporting, and Blackline reconcilements as needed.

  • Ensures that personnel, processes, procedures, and systems are in place to effectively and accurately account for marine barge and vessel activity.

  • Ensure internal controls are established and executed as designed. Monitor controls to verify effectiveness and compliance with SOX requirements.

  • Provide timely coaching and feedback on performance, including year-end performance discussions.

  • Identify and implement continuous improvement of business and systems processes, while maintaining integrity of controls and accuracy of financial statements.

  • Play a lead role in implementing changes to the business impacting assigned areas of responsibility.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required

  • 7 + years of relevant experience

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Proven ability to improve processes using knowledge of business and systems.
